FS: 2000 323i Touring - stock, 131K miles

I am selling my 2000 323i Touring. I'm asking $4500 and I live the San Francisco bay area.

I love this car, but it is time for something more fuel efficient.

Here is the ad I posted on Craig's list. It is a bit hyperbolic but remember that I am writing for the wider used car audience, not e46 enthusiasts like yourselves. Sorry for just cutting and pasting, but I'm getting tired.

I am in the San Francisco bay area (Oakland specifically) and am really only interested in selling to someone locally for cash.

Let me know if there are any questions...

And here is the original ad on craigslist:

Below is the text of that ad:

------------------------------------------------------------

I'm selling my 2000 BMW 323i Touring (wagon). This is an amazing car and is in good shape overall, and excellent shape considering its age.

(Note: I have a bunch of pictures here in hi-res: http://ift.tt/1lRNC11)

Any 3 series fanatic will tell you about how amazing these cars are, especially when it comes to driving dynamics. This particular model was optioned up with the Sport Premium Package which adds 18" alloys, wider tires, a lower, tuned suspension, triptronic automatic/manual transmission, stering wheel mounted audo controls, upgraded stereo with in-dash CD (remember those?) and upgraded interior lighting - all from the factory.

Since buying the car I have added a full set of heavy duty WeatherTech floor mats and rear cargo mat that really protect the carpeting.

The body is in generally excellent shape with a few dings here and there to remind you that you are looking at a 14+ year old car. No rust whatsoever. The paint is bright and there are none of those faded areas you sometimes see on older cars. The interior is in even better shape, with no cracks or noticeable damage to the dash or doors. The leather on all the seating surfaces is still in good condition, with the basic wear and tear on the drivers seat. There are no tears in the leather. The headliner looks brand new. The tires are also nearly new with about 2K miles on the front tires and less than 1,500 miles on the back (documented with receipts). Finally, I replaced the yellowed headlight lenses with brand new clear ones about 5K miles ago. It really makes the car look clean and new.

The car has been serviced at German Auto Sport in Berkeley since the day I bought it five years ago, with regular oil changes and preventative maintenance. I haven't had to do too much work on it recently, though I did replace the transmission a few years ago and the in-tank fuel pump just before last Christmas. It runs like a champ and handles better than any other car I have ever owned (or am likely to own going forward).

Now. . . I really hate buying cars. It is stressful and usually involves a lot of money. To try and make this as stress free a process as I can, I am going to list everything that I think makes this a good car AND I am going to list (exhaustively) everything that I currently know that is wrong with the car. Potential buyers are also welcome to take the car to a (reputable) shop for a pre-purchase inspection.

The good:

1) (relatively) low miles for a car of this caliber at this price (Just under 131K miles - that's just over 9K miles a year).

2) Body and interior in excellent shape.

3) Sport premium package from the factory (including sport seats with driver memory, 18" alloy wheels, sports suspension, in-dash CD player, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, automatic rear view mirror). I'm also throwing in a bluetooth hands free phone thingy. It might be of some use to someone.

4) Nearly brand new tires (2,000 miles on front tires, 1,500 miles on the back).

5) Sunroof (mostly - see below).

6) Leather seats

7) Weather Tech floor mats and rear cargo mat (about $300 new)

8) Mechanically sound with a strong engine, tight suspension, and generally excellent condition all around. No leaks. No smoke. The car pulls hard on the freeway if you put your foot down.

9) Just a beauty. . . I hate to sell it :)

The bad:

Here is a list of every single thing I know is wrong with the car, in order of badness:

1) Oil level sensor needs to be replaced (currently, just after starting the car the yellow oil level light stays on for a bit). This is different than the scary RED oil light. The yellow light just tells you that your oil level is low (it isn't - the sensor is bad). After a moment it warms up and goes away.

2) The sunroof (while 99% ok) should not be opened. I had the whole sunroof repaired with a brand new "deck" installed (the sun shade). But there is a tiny plastic linkage in there that is broken. Apparently they break on all 3 series eventually. Unfortunately you cannot buy them by themselves, but only as part of a $1500 sunroof cassette. The solution is to find one on a wrecked car and transfer it over. My solution was easier: I don't use the sunroof. But if you like sunroofs, you should check to see what it would take to get this part and have it installed. Other than that, the motor works perfectly and it does not leak.

3) There is a big old dent in the rear bumper - actually a big hole in the plastic. You can clearly see it in the pictures. The previous owner did that with a trailer hitch on his SUV on the morning he sold the car to me. Bummer. My solution: Avert my eyes.

4) There is a small dimple/dent in the right rear quarter panel, right next to the gas door. You can also see this in the photos I have supplied.

5) In that same panel there is a small spot where the paint has chipped away and is lifting up from the primer. Note: it is NOT bubbling up from rust. It is just lifting away because it was not properly cleaned in that one area prior to paint. It appears that this part of the car was repainted at some point. I don't have any details more than that. I have included a photo of it (fairly hi-res) so you can see what I am talking about.

6) The outside air temperature sensor is missing. It's just not there (and hasn't been since I bought the car). As a consequence, every so often the car will beep at you some 10 to 15 minutes after you have driven off to warn you that the outside air is -40 degrees (you can see it doing its duty in the photo with the mileage). Oh Noes! Beware of ice! My solution: not freak out about icy roads in the bay area in summer. Alternatively, roll down the window. Is it cold? Then be careful.

7) There are some stains on the carpet in the trunk and a few small stains in the back footwells. There aren't especially noticeable, but I'm trying to be thorough.

8) The dashboard is in almost perfect, new condition. But down around the ashtray area there are some scratches and wear and tear on the plastic. You most likely wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it.

9) Likewise, on the center console where the cup holders are, the color layer on the plastic is coming up a little bit (underneath is almost the exact same color, but a little bit lighter). Again, not the kind of thing you would notice unless you were looking down there.

10) There are the usual little chips and scrapes around the front of the car that you would expect on any used car, though I dare say they are much fewer on this one than most 14+ year old cars - we rarely drove where stones or other debris would be a problem. Check the closeup photo of the headlights. You will see one of the chips just above the headlight lens. This is representative of the size and type of chips I am talking about.

11) There is one several inch long, though comparatively faint scratch on the lower portion of the driver's side front and rear doors. Mental note: Don't help your friends move.

12) There is a small chip in the front windshield, but no spider cracks (and this chip has been there as long as I have owned the car)

13) The driver and passenger front seats both have the usual wear from use (driver's seat more than the passenger's seat). This basically just means dirt that has gotten into the creases of the leather. You will see that on most any older car with light colored leather seats. They might be able to be cleaned, but really it isn't the kind of thing a normal person would even notice unless pointed out. But you aren't normal, are you? You've read this far after all. You can see what I mean in the attached photos.

14) The very edges of the 18" rims have curb rash (and right rear wheel has one tiny bit on one of the faces of the rim). It is pretty minor but I have included pictures of the rims so you can judge for yourself..

15) There are some scuff marks under the front air-dam from the occasional steep curb cut. Check the photo from straight on to see what I mean. There are also some minor scuff marks and scratches in the front and rear bumpers. You can see some of them in the photos I have posted.

16) If you are looking for a fuel efficient car, stop reading long-winded BMW 3 series ads. You are looking in the wrong place. You should be looking at small Japanese cars. Expect about 17 mpg in the city. Low 20's on the highway. That isn't a fault with this particular example. . . that is the actual EPA estimate. The car manages to match it perfectly.

And that about wraps it up. I have a whole bunch of pictures here:
