Looking to buy 1st BMW - would like opinions

Found this '03 ZHP for $10K that i'm looking it at buying long distance (car is in WI, i'm in CT). Had the initial call with the dealer yesterday who will email me maintenance records, pics of the undercarriage (checking for rust) and of the dashboard with the car on (checking for engine lights)

From the pics it looks in terrific shape and has new tires. He is also sending me an inspection report that apparently is mandatory in WI before reselling (forget his exact words) but will look to do my own PPI as well.

Would like your overall opinion on the car and what you think fair market value would be. Been a BMW fan for many, many years but this would be my first one.

The "must's" in my search have been color red, 5/6 spd and sport package, which has proven to be a tough combination to find, so this is basically the only option at the moment.

war zone

My area has been sounding like a war zone for the last 5 minutes. Pistols, rifles, automatic weapons from two different directions... occasional booms. Wtf is going on out there?

Then I remembered what the date and time was:lmao:

LCI Coupe Xenon brightness?

It seems like, recently, the factory adaptive HID headlights (mfg. by AL) on my 04 325Ci just don't seem as bright as they should be. After doing some research, I found out that some of the e46 HID reflector bowls can get burnt and the brightness diminished, but there's very little info about the adaptive Xenons on the newer coupes. If anything, it seems like the AL headlights shouldn't have this problem, from what I've seen. Does anyone have an idea as to why this could be happening, or a way that I could brighten them up? I've noticed some of the e90 LCI and F10s I've seen seem to be almost 50% brighter, or more. I know they're brighter; the headlights are generally better in every way, but I don't think they should be that dramatically different.

Ideas needed...

I've been reading through this forum in one form or another for YEARS. I've had an E46 since I've been driving, first with my 2000 Black 323i, and now with a 2000 Silver 323i. The first had catastrophic engine failure on behalf of my mother's driving. She didn't realize that she was in slapstick mode and blew the engine up. The newer one I have is a project car of sorts... bought it cheap and I'm doing the maintenance on it myself. I've replaced a BUNCH of things so far, but this issue is really bothering me.

First, I have no heat. You're going to tell me that there's a bubble/air pocket in the coolant system. Well, you may still be right, but I've flushed it 3 times, all in the preferred method.

Second, I thought it may be the thermostat, but I've been keeping a keen eye on the temp sensor readout from the cluster and it's a pinch high, but it stays between 99-105C. It heats up a bit then the thermostat opens and cools the engine. So I know the engine isn't baking, or cold.

Third, I thought... maybe the water pump. But when I looked in the overflow tank I saw positive flow of coolant. Also when the hose is removed there is significant flow of coolant when the engine is slightly rev'd.

The reason for me suspecting several of these items is because while on the interstate at ~80Mph I get spurts of really hot air from the system, but in normal driving I get nothing but cold air.

So, is this the thermostat, waterpump, auto climate control unit.... or what? I'm stumped. I never had this issue at all with my previous E46. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Shaking at idle

I own a 2003 330xi. I am having problems with the check engine light coming on when the cars cold. I got the codes checked and BANK1 and Bank4 came up. It already had brand new spark plugs and I just changed the coils. The engine shaking only happens when I turn the car on and it's less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. After letting it hear up and driving the shaking goes and the check engine light goes away sometimes. Please help. I'm don't want to throw money into the wrong places anymore

For rent: Eastwood fender roller $30

If someone wants to rent my fender roller post here or send me a PM for quickest response.

I can also throw in a heat gun (if you don't have one) this will help eliminate the potential problem of cracking/chipping your paint while rolling the fenders.

I"m thinking $30 + shipping to rent the fender roller (and the heat gun if needed).

I would also need a security deposit in case I don't get my tools back... (again )

So the deal is like this you paypal me $100 and I'll send you the fender roller and heat gun if you need it. You have 5 days to use my tool from the day you receive it to the day you ship it back to me. Each additional day will cost you $10

So to sum everything up if you want my fender roller you will paypal me $100 I will ship it to you. Lets say shipping costs me $10 to ship to you and you return the tool to me on time then I will refund you $60. keeping $30 for me and $10 for shipping. (if shipping cost's me $20 you will only be refunded $50 and so on)

If anyone has any questions or wants me to post pics I'm happy to oblige, but its literally a brand new Eastwood fender roller. (until someone rents it)

E46 M3 04 SMG Silver Gray/Imola 75K miles

Only two owners since new with all service records and up to date maintenance. Interior and exterior are near flawless. Needs a new driver front floor mat is the only issue to speak of. It has cold weather and sports package, Harmon Kardon, PDC, 19" CSL Competition wheels, Ipod integration, Sirius Radio, black kidney grill and side gills, TTFS CSL SMG Tune.

It just had an inspection 2 done. Vanos bolts have been replaced and subframe kit installed as well, no issues at all. It did have new tires, rotors and brake pads put on all four corners. The SMG pump was repalced at 64K by the BMW dealership and works perfectly.

I think this is one of the best color combos and easily the cleanest low mileage coupe available right now. Please call or text me for more info and pictures (309)370-2657 Caesar

cooling system and heating issue...

Hi all,

I've recently purchased a 2004 325 and have started to see issues with the cooling system and heating.

The heating currently only blows cold and the car keeps overheating and then returning to normal. If I pull over when it starts to overheat, let the pressure out at the expansion cap the temp goes straight back to normal and stays that way for a good while... still no heating though. I also keep getting water level/radiator light on/off but I'm pretty sure the the levels are good, I've topped up etc. The heating was working on and off

But now it is always blowing cold.

Does this sound like a bleeding issue?

Thanks.

gmanM3's e46 M3 log - picture heavy -

Hello all,

I've been following and reading up on e46fanatics.com long before I had an e46, but I've decided to finally start posting. I'm new to the Houston, TX area, if there are any other e46fanatics in the area.

After searching many months for the right manual transmission M3, I picked up my 2002 e46 M3 a little over 3 years ago, and it has been the best. A lot of fun from the pure joy of driving, as well as getting to meet other enthusiasts.

Now onto the pictures::clap:

One of the first days as a proud new owner in Dec 2011.

I've had the great fun taking the M3 autocrossing a couple times with SPOKES, drag-racing at San Antonio Raceway, and even on a circuit once at Harris Hill Road in San Marcos.

I've gone pretty regularly to the local car meets in the Austin area (i.e. Car's & Coffee, Cobb Tuning meets, etc..)

The car is just phenomenal. Love taking it for drives out in the hill-country and fun roads.

Here it is with the daily driver, a 2004 e46 325xi touring automatic with cold weather package. Great for the commute and Houston traffic.

Now onto the M3's MODS

First thing I did was add the Turner Motorsports Power Pulley Set. The butt-dyno felt a slight throttle response and mid-range torque gain.

Put in some shiny aluminum pedals

Smoked side marker turn signals and black side grills

Matte black kidney grills, smoked front bumper reflectors, and DEPO smoked corners with orange bulbs.

Had the DEPO LED tail lights most of the time but recently switched to the OEM BMW LED tail lights. The car originally came with the bulb tail lights. The interior panel that goes into the trunk with the trunk light is miles better on the OEM LED tail lights versus that of DEPO. Just much cleaner installation.

Finally installed some Angel Eyes from Khoalty, and some very sharp looking LED smoked corners from DEPO. The angel eyes look great and the finish is really nice. The headlight shroud unfortunately blocks and is in the way a little at the bottom of the lights, but overall I am pleased with how it ended up. i managed to make the wiring through the engine bay clean.:woot:

The biggest mod yet has been the installation of Custom Performance Innovation's Single-Stepped Headers along with their Euro200R section 1. I had the Euro200r section modified to only have one resonator as oppose to the two they offer. The finish and quality is excellent. I was very impressed when I received both pieces. The welds look awesome. Installing them was pretty tricky taking up much of a day and night. There was some difficulty getting the new headers both through the small passage way. The biggest difficulty was getting the old nuts off and the new nuts tightened up. A combination of the tricky angles and the very long new header studs that came with the installation kit made for a long process. The new gaskets, studs, nuts, stickers, and gummy bears were all great quality and fit well. I was disappointed the entire kit did not come with 2 plugs, as the headers have four (2 of which are taken by the O2 Sensors). Luckily, my fellow M3 enthusiast buddy had some to spare). The results are awesome. I think the real power gains will come with a tune, but there's certainly some difference in the mid-range of how the car picks up. The sound is rad, especially on cold start up. Much more race car like, especially with the smell while the race cats are warming up. There's some added drone at 2400rpm & 2800 rpm, which adds a lot of character that I enjoy.

I will add to the log as my journey with this car continues. Thanks for reading this far, hope you enjoyed it!

Cheers,

gmanM3
