M3 smg pump help

Hello this is my first post on this forum after looking for post with similar issues to mine and no luck finding them So I just decided to make my own . So recently I just got my first car an e46 m3, yes before you say I'm gonna kill my self I'm not an idiot I love this car and I understand how dangerous it can be and what it's capable of . I've had it for about 3 weeks and about a week ago I was driving to the gym and all of the sudden the EML light went on and all the buttons flashed and I had to pull over and turned off the car and turned it back on and it was fine for about another week then it happend again .. but this time after I turned it off and on the little transmission light to the right went on and it's been on since , I've noticed the car driving a bit weird. When I shift and get back on the gas it's as if it doesn't catch gear immediately it will rev for a second or so then be completely fine . My uncle owns his own shop an he had plugged one of his computers into it and it said I needed a new tps sensor (Witch is probably the solution to the issue I noticed) but it said the hydraulic pumps off .. I know that cost a lot of money and that's a serious issue but if the pump wasn't working will I still be able to shift fine ? The car has 81k miles and the only problems I notice is the tps sensor. He had told me if I'm gonna swap the smg pump might as well swap a whole new trans , WICH didn't make too much sense to me seemed kind of unnecessary. The car literally drives perfect other than the throttle catching right after a shift. Can someone help identify what's wrong ? Do I need a new pump let alone a new trans that will cost 5k?! Thanks

Bilstein B4 Shocks + Vogtland Lowering Springs?

I just ordered some new B4 shocks and I was also thinking about dropping the height of the car while I have the suspension off. The B4s are marketed as 10% stiffer than the OEM Sachs struts so should Vogtland springs perform properly on B4s?

Looking for Parts for 05 330 Ci Vert with ZHP & Cold Weather Pkg

I'm finding some parts I'd like to get hold of that are missing on my 2005 330Ci convertible.
1. Actual ash tray that fits to right of cig lighter in front console
2. Rolling top that covers rear of console ash tray between front seats but used by rear seat passengers
3. Jacking pads (if they can be removed and reinstalled without damage)
4. Round velcro Mat-loks (2) that fasten to vehicle floor for attaching oem floor mats
5. Drivers side "batwing" plastic piece that fastens in headliner. It sits to left of left rear passenger's left shoulder and fastens to fabric.
6. Factory radio/cd unit as a previous owner installed an aftermarket Kenwood. I'd like to get it back to stock.

Anyone have any of these? Thanks

Mike in Alabama

7mm non hubcentric spacer

Does anyone know the lenght of the hub on a e46? (Too lazy to go out and measure). Couldn't find any spacer under 10mm that is hubcentric so I just ordered a non hubcentric 7mm spacer. Will it be safe to run them?

Wagon Car Cover?

Does anyone have a car cover that works well with their wagon? I don't think BMW made one specifically for the touring. I'd prefer one that fits snugly, but am open to suggestions to other covers that work.

Not sure what to ask for, but I am contemplating a possible sale of my 2006 M3.

- 0 paint work
- 0 dings
- TC Kline suspension
- Vorsteiner difuser

Need some advice

My husband and I are thinking of starting a garage next year. He wants to get me a diagnostic tablet from one of the tool vendors, Mac tools or Marco tools. Can someone with more experience let me know what if any advantage that has over using the fusion ap and doing research to find possible problems. Hubby thinks these computers tell you exactly what part of the system needs to be replaced without a bunch of testing and chasing gremlins.

Any advice would be great. I am no pro and dont claim to be. We are wanting to do this because shops charge so damn much to do work and we want to help people like us with lower incomes by opening a poor mans garage. Hubby is a great mechanic but he relys on me for the code reader crap and research. Is it worth it to go with an expensive price of equipment if I dont have the technician training?
I'll gladly learn or take a few classes but I dont plan on going back to college just to diagnose an engine code.

Replaced alternator and battery twice, battery light still on!

Hey guys,
I don't post too much since i can usually figure out my cars issues but today i'm really stumped! About 2 months ago the alternator went out on my 2004 330ci, the car died and the battery light came on. The battery was dead and it was obvious the alternator had given up. I bought a new Ultima alternator from Oreilly's which i put in quickly without any issues. I charged the battery and the car started right up, however the battery light was still on. I used a voltmeter and confirmed the alternator was making 13.8v across the battery terminals over the whole rpm range which led me to believe that my battery was bad since it is about 8 years old. I put in a new battery which changed nothing. I drove the car from San Francisco to San Diego (500 miles) since i had to get home with no issues along the way. I read on the other posts that sometimes the refurbished alternators are not perfect or that new batteries sometimes are bad. I pulled the battery from my m3 which has the same battery and exchanged the alternator at Oreilly's believing it was bad. Now i have the battery from the m3 which i know is good in the car and a new alternator. Battery light is still on. At idle the battery reads 13.58v, at idle with the lights and all electronics on it reads 13.28v, the gauge cluster shows 13.6v with the lights off, and with the car off the battery reads 12.25v. Anybody have any ideas? Any help appreciated. Thanks

e46 330d manual battery light problems.help

while im waiting on a replacement alternator arriving,im just trying to see if anyone else ccan shed any light on this
While driving im getting battery light when revs hit about 3500rpm
tested battery at shop with Bosch tester and it said battery is good, but only 60% charged
The thing is,Im getting 14.1volts at battery(with dig meter) so cant understand why battery light is appearing. yesterday it started appearing as low as 2500rpm.
no ther faults apart from glow plug module but thats been like that for ages.
is it possible it can still be alternator/regulator if it still puts out 14.1v?
Also on a 99 reg 330d does the voltage get regulated thru ecu etc as ive heard on later models this is the case.could be wrong though.
ive checked most grounds under bonnet which seem to be fine.cant see grounds from engine to gearbox or chassis legs.be handy if anyone has a pic or 2

Good video on rear diff axle seal?

I have a leaking real axle seal on the drivers side of the diff of my e46 330i. I am getting a 3rd car so I have the chance to look at doing this myself. I drive 500 miles/week and the diff vent is plugged as well due to all of the oil and crap on the diff.

I learn better with videos - how difficult is this for a moderately mechanically inclined person? I have not found videos for an E46 other than Xi cars but I just have an i. Not sure what other manufacturers videos I can watch that have the same basic set up.

DIY photos not displaying

Hi all,

The photos in my DIYs are not displaying cause Photobucket changed its terms of use. Linking photos on forums is now considered 3rd party hosting and they want $400/yr. I'm not paying that so while I look for another solution you can:
Click on the image to open in Photobucket.

If that doesn't work, Chrome users can open the image in an incognito tab. That seems to consistently work for me.

Sorry for the hassle. Unfortunately it is summer and I won't have a lot of time to fix this till the fall.

URGENT help needed!

Here's the situation - I've been living in Norway but I'm due to leave the country today and return to the UK, with the rent on my apartment finishing today as well.

I recently replaced the expansion tank after the previous one developed a crack, the coolant then did not circulate so I removed the thermostat as a temp fix. It had been working fine until just now when I parked the car outside my apartment to load my luggage - I noticed a leak coming from one of the hoses connected to the expansion tank (assume it's the o ring).

I filled the tank to the brim, half tightened the cap and left the car on idle for 5 minutes - it leaked 125ml in this time.

I can see where the leak is coming from, is it possible to try and duct tape around the leak when it's dry to try and seal it? If not, can I drive with the leak and top it off every half hour?

There are no garages open on the weekend, and most have min 1 week waiting time at the moment. Staying here any longer would also mean re-booking hotels and ferries, and finding last minute accommodation here.

Any suggestions?

Hosting photos

Where is a good spot to host photos to display on this site? I was using Photobucket, yet now they consider linking to an image "3rd party hosting" (http://ift.tt/2s9XFWe) and want $400/yr for it.

Most of the DIYs I wrote for the convertible forum have the photos hosted on photobucket and unfortunately and it is going to be a lot of work to update them... so I'm looking for a solution that will last for years and not end up in the same state as photobucket.

I could upload here, although I link far more photos per post than upload allows.. and the image detail is reduced.

What is this part called?

I've already looked around, and I am at a complete loss. I went even on the RealOEM website for this part and its not even labeled. I see it on the diagram but its not labeled from what I can see. I have a 2001 BMW 330Ci. Its a part of the bumper but it can come off. Its all cracked up and I just wanna find the part number or what its called atleast to replace it. I dont want to replace the entire bumper, just this one small part and everytime I check a junk yard, they are all cracked too and no one knows what its called. Thank you!!!

What's my car worth? 2002 BMW 330ci cinnamon interior

Hello all. I'm considering selling my BMW 330ci, and wanted to see what the value of it is. My uncle is interested I buying the car for my niece but to be honest I don't know what I would sell it for. So I thought I'd ask you guys and maybe get some competing offers at the same time ;)
It's a 2002 330ci with premium package, cold weather package, and sport package. It has 170k miles but has been maintained at the same shop it's entire life and maintained religiously. Always garaged, paint is in fantastic condition, interior is in mint condition. When I bought it I put $1200 in it fixing a head gasket leak, drive belts and misc tune up costs. And then $800 on firehawk Indy tires. The rims are 19in oem m3 front rims. 235 all around.
What would you say the value Is? It drives perfectly, and looks spectacular.

Thanks for the help

Another EU2 call for help

Good morning folks, I have a simple question...

I've been preparing to flash my 03 325iT to EU2 for a while. I have all the software loaded and functioning. I have updated my DME to the latest flash suggested by WinFKP with no issues.

But, I'm a bit uncertain about my next step. I have looked through the programmed DMEs on bmwfans.info and realoem to find the appropriate EU2 zusb number for my car and I've hit a brick wall.

None of the zusbs listed match my car's equipment exactly.
http://ift.tt/2tsL0RZ

The closest I can come is 7 564 762. But, it lists "SMG: Yes". I do not have a SMG, just a regular old 5 speed.

My question is this. Can I use this zusb (7 564 762) to flash my car, even though it does not have an SMG? As you can imagine, I'm worried about bricking my car by using the wrong flash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need Help Identifying This Cold Start Rattle

Another day, another E46 issue. :D This one came out of nowhere. The cold start rattle (starts at 0:14) happens whether the DISA is plugged in or not. The rattling noise goes away after a few seconds.

Is it the idler pulley? I can't tell where it's coming from. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

E46 330 FS: 2004 ZHP Coupe - $975 (This week only)

I'm selling complete chassis, ZHP motor, 6-speed transmission and drivetrain. Come pick it up in Cincinnati, OH. It has been sitting so long that the engine does not start currently. The first video shows this. Before this happened, I had no issues at all with the engine, or transmission for that matter. The second and third video show the engine starting up and running fine before the car was sitting. The chassis has over 180K miles but the engine has about 140K miles. It was replaced completely brand new under warranty by BMW when the car had 43K miles. I've posted the receipt from BMW showing the new engine replacement.

Everything in the pictures is what comes with the car, I stripped out the interior. The control arms are OEM Lemfoerder and were installed a month before my car was totaled. The steering rack is a rebuilt ZHP rack by the Rack Doctor. Exhaust is OEM ZHP.

Last year my car was hit in the front left and damaged the front left wheel, bent the strut and outer tie rod and warped the strut mount tower. My insurance company would only value the car as a regular 330 so with the miles they would only total the car. I decided to part out the car. Here is a picture right after the accident.

I need to get this car out of my garage so my loss is your gain. Come pick it up sometime this week with $975 cash for everything. I know the engine is not running right now, but I had no problems before it sat, and I'm including everything else which 6-speed transmission, drivetrain and some suspension components are all still great.

I'm located in Cincinnati, OH 45205. My email is danwags999@gmail.com and my phone number is 5132136492. You can text or call me.

I'm Back and Looking for a Project Car

So a lot of you probably don't know me, but i used to post on this board daily back in..jeez, I think the last time I posted regularly was maybe 2008

A lot has happened since then, most relevant is I moved to NY and kind of lost my love of cars. Now, I look at cars as a means to get around and nothing more. Kinda sad, I know

BUT, in the past two weeks, I've been watching random detailing YouTube channels like AMMO NY, and another guy names ChrisFix and it's reignited my love of cars

I'm moving back to LA soon and I want to have a project car I can drive on the weekends and track days (so needs to be road legal)

At first, I was thinking of an s2000 or e36 M3, but I thought I'd rather take a $5K (or below) car and fix it up

Any suggestions?

side note: BTW, it's kind of funny, when I used to post on this site back in 2008, I could barely afford the $150 I spent for the Mtech II kit on my silver 330i (which I gave to my little cousin). But I'm 33 now, and excited to be able to properly mod my car

edit: after posting, I saw my sig below...LOL, yea, like I said, I didn't make any money when I was 24-25 so I never got to installing any of those "Future Mods" haha

e46 newbie

Hello there, i'm Themba from Tembisa(Kempton park), South Africa. My project to rebuild this neglected 2001 320d (M47engine)has suffered a setback and i hope to get it back on track here. Long story short, earlier in jan this year i got lost and ran out of gas, put in 5litres to get to the nearest filling station and then the DDE light started staying on permanently every time i switch on the ignition. The car was still running fine though. This past weekend as i was driving the car it suddenly started idling rough, puffed out black exhaust smoke and engine cut out. Towed it to my garage, opened the hood and found that one of the wires(red one) connecting to the Fuel Injectors pressure sensor had snapped. Soldered it back and tried to start, now the car cranks but wont start. Upon investigating the fuel supply system i noticed diesel pressure is ok up to after the diesel filter that is located under the passenger side of the car. However, no diesel is supplied in the injection rai
I'm still waiting for my Inpa cable that I ordered on bid or buy.l.
How can i test if the High Pressure Diesel Pump is working or not in the meantime.

FS: Valentine One or VV1

For sale is my Valentine One or V1. Good condition, everything works. Bought for my E46 but not only do I not get to speeds where I really need this, but I now realize that virtually all my driving is residential, and this just doesn't really have a use there. Comes with suction mount. Price is $280 OBO.

I know V1 used to be the best you could get, pretty much still is AFAIK.

Aussie 323Ci - Long, Boring, Don't Read

This is my 2000 Fern Green 323Ci purchased last year to use as a dedicated track and BMW Club events car. It was originally ordered from Australia and delivered in Munich specifically without a sunroof, which means I don’t have 25kg in the wrong place! The last owner had it for ten years and it had a perfect service record. I was able to get the itemised invoices so can see that everything was done to keep it in perfect mechanical condition . With 160,000 kms on the clock it has hit the 100,000 mile anniversary and needed work to ensure it would do the next 100,000. It was mechanically in great condition except that the suspension was worn out.

It replaced this, a 2000 328i which was a garage queen and show car. It came first in class in the BMW Nationals in 2015. Nice car but it was never going to be a track car!

The first job was to bring the interior back to life. The leather took some effort to getting it back to spec. Using a company in the UK, I matched the leather colour then re-stained the leather seats, front and back to restore the colour and remove any creases and blemishes. The lesson from this was how heavy the seats were with their electric motors. But the end result is that the interior is now very clean and presentable and the leather has years left in them.

Next was the suspension. Having had a lot of experience with Koni Sports (adjustable) struts and shocks I went with a Koni/H&R Sport Spring package which I sourced from Germany. This combination was nearly half the cost of what I was being quoted here in Sydney, including shipping. Also ordered all new bump stops, pads and other bits from Pelican Parts in California. Over Christmas last year did the job over two days as I wasn’t in a rush and it is really a pretty easy job to do. Mind you, it did remind me that I am not 21 anymore! That did reveal that the front sway bar links were kaput so a new set went in. The rest of the front arms and bushes were quite new so no problems there.

Intending to track the car I was conscious of the rear sub frame and tower issues and took steps to ensure this would not be a problem. Pelican supplied a full set of UUC rear mounts and Lemforder bushes as well as an AKG Sports reinforcement kit and knowing how horrendous the job was, gave it to my local mechanic who said that out of a score of 10 in difficulty, it rated a 12! That’s why I gave it to you, was my reply. Thanks Steve from Guy Tassell Automotive. As an aside I got them to glue the reinforcement plates instead of welding. They did a great job and the car drives like new.

Although intending to put a full cold air intake (something like an Injen short air ram intake) in I temporarily replaced the stock air filter with a K&N unit. Fresh brake fluid and a change in diff oil and we were nearly ready to go. A full external detail followed and then it was the pre-track day check. May not be the fastest but always look good! :lmao: I always pull off each wheel to check brakes, wheels for cracks and tyres for any problems. Good thing I did as there was a screw in the left rear. A professional fix and I was ready for the track. Am running Michelin Pilot Sports on the car at the moment and didn’t have time to organise a set of R spec tyres.

Track day debut was with the BMW Club NSW at Eastern Creek outside Sydney on the South Circuit, a very twisty and hilly course which was huge fun as well as being technically difficult. My choice of a 323Ci was deliberate as I wanted to compete in a particular class to have fun. This isn’t about sheep stations. (Translation: no mega-buck prizes even if you do win). It also pitted me against both six and four cylinder models with approximately similar power to weight ratios. So although the 323Ci is a 2.5 liter six it is actually outclassed on paper by E36 318is and Ti models. On such a tight course, they definitely had an advantage. So the nut behind the wheel is just as important as the car.

Anyway, had a great time and didn’t do too badly. The road tyres overheated quickly and we started sliding around which not only cost time but led to a few “are we going to hold the turn” moments. I needn’t have worried as the suspension and tyres held up well. I had set the Konis to full soft on the rear and one turn on the front. Will change that to one turn on the rear and one and a half turn on the fronts. But a great day out and the car handled so well. I didn’t mention that it was an automatic and it responded quite well in manual mode. Tried it in sport mode but on this type of circuit it constantly was playing catch up. By the way the reason for an auto was that every E46 I had seen in manual (at least for my budget) was in very poor condition. Besides, I am of that age where I can’t be bothered with clutches and gearshifts!

Even with fresh brake fluid pedal feel wasn’t too good at some moments due to continual use of the brakes. Have no idea what pads are on the car but they gave good enough grip. Same for rotors. They are round and metal looking and I suspect they are ATE but no guarantees. So track day one was a good test day and after consideration I am going to do a few more things to the car.

As you can see in the photos there is a little more body roll than I would like. Adjusting the Konis will help but I think a set of stiffer (bigger) sway bars would work better. So I have ordered a set of Whiteline 30mm front 20mm rear combination sway bars. It will also help me to dial out the tendency to understeer the car has at the moment. The standard Sport seats are great and more than adequate for track days but I will get a harness to keep me locked into place. Other modifications will be a remap after the cold air intake is fitted and R spec tyres. Accordingly a cheap set of Style 44’s has been sourced and after a refresh will be shod with Hankook RS3’s. Lighter wheels were an option but at this stage I would rather put the money to other things and worry about that later.

After that it will be a set of slotted rotors with standard Textar pads. Yes I could get a more dedicated track pad but there is a set sitting on the shelf and from what I have read here they are a great combination. A set of steel brake lines also won’t go astray. While the cooling system is looking and performing well enough history is against it so a new water pump, thermostat, hoses etc. will all go in. The mechanical fan will come out and be replaced with an electric unit. Although they look OK, the engine mounts will be updated and the transmission will get a flush. About the only thing that hasn’t been replaced by this stage will be the guibo so at some stage that too will get fixed up.

Why an E46 rather than an E36 or something else? Well I think the E46 will be the iconic pre-turbocharged 3 Series. It is to my eyes, the best looking and has a combination of style and technology that gets it by even today. Having owned an E46 328i Sedan I think the sports oriented Coupe is a far superior car, seems more balanced and is just as good to look at. Whilst the temptation of turning it into a CSL replica is there I think I have enough to do to get the mechanicals the way I want them and then just go and have fun!

Gelashvili performance

I wonder how gelashvili performance is so successful with turboing many E46's. How come they can do 325i's and 330i's while our members give a hard time to the people that ask about it. I understand that it cost more than the car. Just wondering what they do that's so special that not many others can't?

Had a rattle, changed the oil now it's gone

For the past 12 months, I had this annoying rattle that sounded like a heat shield or exhaust flex pipe coming from my car. It was metal on metal sounding from the right front corner. The car ran fine. It would happen during hard acceleration of if the A/C was on. I had the car serviced yesterday oil, filter change grease etc... now the rattle is gone. I had only put in 4000 miles since the last oil change but, it was over a year since the last one so i decided to change it. Now i'm wondering if the shop that did the oiil change a year ago used the wrong oil and it was something internal or the shop left something lose and now it was tightened up this time around. It's bothering me very much.
