CCV question

Hey guys,

I have an 02 330 w/138k miles, Meticulously maintained by me. I did my replaced my CCV with the " cold weather kit" about 2 years ago (March 2013). Anyway , I bought a beater car so I would have to drive my car this winter. I start the car once a week or so,and maybe drove it 10-20 miles in the last 2 months. Yesterday I took it for a ride to the bank ( about 2 miles away ) and noticed a ton of smoke coming from the tail pipe. When I pulled the oil cap off , I saw this milky white crap which looked like condensation or something. I did some searching and some say head gasket, some say CCV is clogged. I guess my question is if it is condensation from the extreme cold and me not driving it all the time, will this go away when the weather warms up ? Should I go on a nice long drive ( 20 30 highway miles)? The car runs perfect, no CEL , no hiccups ,ect. Once in a blue moon , when its really, really cold , it might start up and run a lil rough for 30 secs and then be perfect . Thanks in advance, and happy motoring......

Coolant related issue. overheating.

So to state my problem. I attempt to bleed the car. Everything is good with the heater on. I turn the AC and it overheat until i turn on the heater again. Also it will eventually overheat no matter what. What is the best way to bleed this car that is as close to fool proof as possible.*

(How I have tried to bleed the car is key being set to the ignition position but engine not on. Blower on low and heat at 91. Take filler cap and bleeder screw off. Fill until constant fluid comes out. Screw in bleeder screw. Remove excess fluid from expansion tank then replace filler cap)

Mind you I have recently replaced the coolant temp sensor. I have a spare brand new thermostat on hand. Expansion tank was replaced at 80k miles same as

2000 BMW 328ci 5 speed. Located in Hawaii on Oahu @Schofield Barracks

2 Questions for Tirerack - SSR Wheels

I was wondering and have been wondering for a while if Tirerack ever plans on carrying SSR wheels as I have combed the website (tirerack.com) and do not see them listed anywhere. Is this due to the problems people experienced years ago where the wheels were separating? I experienced this with a set of SSR GT3s (now discontinued wheel and the insurance claim was FUN; Let me tell you). I am just curious as I want a set of SSR Professors and would really like to go through tirerack.com if possible for them. I will purchase them elsewhere and just deal with any inconvenience of shuttling wheels around to have tires mounted but wanted to ask anyway.

Second question:

Does Tirerack.com have any plans to carry APEX wheels? I am just wondering as again, as far as convenience goes, most of "us" (car enthusiasts) want quality tires to go with quality wheels so will end up ordering from TireRack ANYWAY and end up paying tax and shipping separately for two different orders for essentially one item on our cars and deal with the "shuttling" around of having tires installed wherever. It's just really inconvenient, especially if you only have one car. Some vendors package tires with wheels (CCW, EAS and others I am sure....just to note that.).

I'm really curious about my first multi part question about SSRs as I REALLY like the look of SSR Professors even to this day which shows how well their look has aged.

Crinkling noise under front suspension!

Hey guys, I have a 06 330ci w/performance package and manual transmission. A few months back I went through the front end suspension and replaced both shocks with oem, the control arms with meyle hd's, installed powerflex arm bushings and new brakes-

Since then when braking it sounds like there is am aluminum can being crunched repeatedly whenever I brake enough as to get the front suspension starting to go down(loaded I guess).

Is anyone familiar with this problem?? I've double checked that everything is torqued correctly and I followed bentley publishers on it start to finish but I can't find this dang sound for anything!! :(

Muffler Question

Sup Fanatics,

So I started my car's exhaust system with a simple muffler delete. Liked it for a week, but then I wanted more loud. So I took the front muffler/resonator, along with the middle resonator off, leaving me with a "Catback Straight Pipe". Loved the loudness of it for the past few months, now I'm tired of it and want to quiet it down a bit along with changing the tone.

I've been searching around the internet for mufflers just to try out. I was originally going to put my stock muffler back on, but decided to get something else. I'm going to leave both resonators out, just add a rear muffler.

I'm curious to know if anyone has given this muffler a try and if they have a sound clip of it, preferably with both resonators deleted.

I've found one on YouTube that seems to be the same muffler, although I'm not sure. He also still has both resonators in place.

http://ift.tt/1Aj9GUz

This seems to be the same muffler.

Anyone know what would cause this?

Anyone know what would cause this to contract when engine cold. Have done a recent overhaul of the cooling system, new thermostat, water pump, coolant tank, lower tank hose and new coolant. System has been bled but noticed the other morning this hose contracts when cold. I think its the original and i did have to bend it out the way when working on the system. Im wondering if this has weakened it. Just to note i had a new tank cap, also tried old cap and still does it. Anyone any ideas?

330 intake valve

AiM group buy

We have arranged a group buy (send an email for the details) on the AiM Solo DL to all Spec E46 racers through March 31. Includes metal mounting plate, USB transformer, USB download cable, crappy but pretty quickstart guide. Suction cup mount is an additional $34 and shipping is via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box at cost. Other AiM loggers (EVO4/G-Dash combination, MXL2, and MXG) are available as well.

This is easily the most cost effective and full featured data acquisition system available for the E46 platform today. In additional to all the GPS and accelerometer based performance data, the DL can be wired to the vehicle's CAN bus to record all sorts of useful information such as rpm, throttle position, brake on/off, oil temp, water temp, voltage, fuel level, individual wheel speeds, etc. We're working on creating templates to make acquisition and analysis of this information as easy as possible. All loggers will be configured with all known tracks and for SE46, included in delivery.

To order send an email to aim@spece46.com with "aim group buy" in the subject and your name/address in the body. Once your email is received a paypal invoice will be generated and sent. Orders will ship on or before March 31.

Sensor Hanging off Front Bumper

*Sorry. Posted this in the Convertible section out of habit for my car. Could any mod please move this? Thanks.

Hi Guys,

My brother just sent me a picture of some sort of sensor hanging off his front, passenger side bumper. He has a 2004 330i. What does this look like it could be? I've read of 3 possibilities:

1. Outdoor Temperature (though I read this is on the driver side)

2. Something for the secondary horn

3. Something to do with heating the washer fluid

Any help is much appreciated.

Was it a good deal?

I recently bought a 2001 330i for $4000.. it has 143,000 miles , premium package

mario602

Hi there I'm a new member

2004 330ci cold start and car shakes softly

This is usually just a cold start idle issue, it does not affect the rpms enough to fluctuate. The vehicle will warm up and the subtle shake will subside, another symptom i need to mention is the exhaust sounds like it's just putting during the cold idle process. This could be nothing or something since I'm in the service it's prudent I do preventative maintenance instead of the car just dying on me. Any help would be appreciated

Tire rack - anyone else?

First of all, I've ordered from Tire Rack before and never had any problems. Maybe times have changed...

After calling Tire Rack today about my order, their customer service agent, as well as sales agent, said they shipped Monday... but for the last 4 days their tracking #s from UPS weren't showing anything. I ended up calling UPS tonight and they said Tire Rack issued a lost package investigation even before they dropped off my order for delivery. UPS finally got my order after I called Tire Rack to ask where my order was.

I also ordered my tires to come from their Denver, CO warehouse. They once more lied and said Denver didn't have the tires, so they shipped out of Louisiana. My tires should have been here and installed 2 days after my order, but now in the middle of another snow storm, have to wait for 1-2 weeks or more before they will refund my credit card. Unfortuantely, I don't have the extra money on hand to order from someone else, someone local.

It's like Tire Rack knows they have you over a barrel and bank on people keeping the tires even though they arrive 2 weeks after you ordered at a 2-day delivery. Fck them. It's become a matter of principle now and after they've lied, they're getting their tires back and I'll never order from them again. There's no reason for their dishonesty.

I'm starting to think that if you can't order from Amazon, then keep it local. It might be a bit more expensive, but, hell, it's not worth the BS these companies run you through with their outdated return policy. You'd think Tire Rack would own up to their mistake, apologize, or even try to make it right and by right, I mean for them to refund my $600 now, rather than wait until they get their tires back and then process them. Can't they contact UPS and have the order returned? After all it's 2015. Whatever...

Slim number plates on rear

Hi guys I'm new around here,

Just looking for the go-to solution for having slim plates mounted on the rear. I've recently bought a 323Ci and the previous owner has slim plates on the back which look hideous as they hang too low. I would drill through the plate but it would go through letters and numbers on both sides.

Anything short of reordering standard size from VicRoads would be great.

Cheers, and see you guys around

Mods that are NOT OK? A list to consider

I've compiled a mango list of E46 "mods" that are NOT OK. This is a way of saying these things are dangerous or poor taste. I think we can all agree there are some that would call unsafe or "ghetto" mods out there on public roads. These are also things that just don't make sense for the vehicle. Many here are new here to the E46 community and maybe we can point them in a safe and proper direction that's good for safety.. and the car!

Of course everyone's taste is different--That's why I want to get your opinion--what do you think of the mods on the list? Do you have any you want to add or take out based on what you've seen out there? Any other mod that's dangerous and think the community needs more awareness to make the road safer? or at least more tasteful for our nice cars we all love here?

We'll just call these:

Ghetto: Get that stuff outta here! Doesn't belong on a BMW or anything on the street! Dangerous! Unsafe! or just not nice.

Not so ghetto: Barely acceptable. Facepalm lite. :eeps::hmm:

"Ghetto":

Aftermarket applied tint darker than 20%

Cheap HID mods. Includes DDM or similar generic chinese-designed/manufactured HID systems placed into stock or improper & inexpensive aftermarket housings. Also includes replacing factory HID with cheap DDM/generic HID.

Aftermarket intake system, particularly on non-M vehicles

Drop-in K&N filter, particularly on non-M vehicles

Aftermarket, no-name, cheap-name, or budget coilovers. Forgot all the brands but you know what they are.

Air ride

"Euro" plates, especially with a US plate over it.

Aftermarket headunit/stereo with bezel. Particularly if single-din.

Welded differential

Camber beyond negative 3 degrees aka "stance"* (exception: unless done so for an exclusively tracked vehicle)

Non-euro spec oil (Oil that doesn't meet ACEA A3/B3 standard). (Ex: Mobil 1 5W-30, generic synthetic or conventional oil)

Steering wheel covers

Any body parts or car parts with zip ties intended as a semi-permanent or permanent repair. *OK to limp home on zip ties if necessary to go home, but should be repaired very soon after that.

Tow hook installed on car while on anything but track or tow truck

Any tape in engine bay used for sealing a hole to a vital part such as cooling hose or breathing tube/line.

Aftermarket ///M-Striped shift boots, handbrake boots, armrest covers, etc.

Installed metal pedal covers, regardless of brand.

Generic tires. Nexen, Ling-Long, Federal, etc.

Front window tinted

Smoked or blacked out lights

DIY red painted calipers

DIY painted headlight bowls or foglights (regardless of color)

Headlight "Eyebrows"

DIY painted grilles

Roof racks not in use, particularly when sig photos are taken or posted of a car with said rack not in use. Or when a racked car is trying to "hard park" at meets especially combined with "stance."

"Hard parking" at meets.

Aftermarket applied ///M stripes to grilles, hood, fender, or any other part of vehicle.

Plastidip grills, wheels, emblem, or entire car.

Chrome wheels

Aftermarket black wheels, particularly inexpensive ones.

Aftermarket wheels with chrome or polished lip, particularly w/ black spokes/face.

Stretched tires--tires more narrow than the wheels.

Damage to fenders from said stretched tires/large wheel/stanced combo.

Stuffed animals on vehicle exterior, particularly at rear. Includes "drift animals"

Stickers on front/rear bumpers. Particularly drift "culture" stickers, bandaid stickers, sideways tilted stickers, japanese characters or animals, etc.

Racing seats in an automatic or otherwise stock vehicle

"Tuner lugs" (those colored ones particularly)

Not so "ghetto":

Sprintbooster

"Racing" ignition coils

Aftermarket applied tint lighter than 20%

Roof spoiler

Nurburgring sticker when never been to Nurburgring

Stud conversion for show. Particularly in combination with r!cer wheels and car does not see track duty. (Easily acceptable if used heavily for competition!)

Aftermarket exhaust, particularly if loud.

Angel eyes (assuming "properly" installed and wired)

One-millionth BMW 3 Series Sedan produced at BMW South Africa’s Rosslyn Plant.

”million 3s”

Plant Rosslyn was the BMW Group’s first foreign plant in 1973 and has grown to become a key link in its global production network.

In 2014, about 2,900 workers at the site built 68,771 BMW 3 Series Sedans for local and export sales.

The one-millionth vehicle, a BMW 3 Series Sedan, rolled off the assembly line at BMW’s South African manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria, earlier today. The production anniversary was celebrated during a visit by member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production, Harald Krüger.

“Globalization has been an inherent part of our corporate strategy for more than four decades. Established in 1973, plant Rosslyn was BMW Group’s first foreign plant and represents a cornerstone of our global production network with presently 30 sites in 14 countries. To this day, the South African production site remains a vivid example of a successful market entry through local production,” said Krüger on the occasion of the anniversary.

BMW cars made in South Africa are also successful on the international stage. Since its inception, and before the establishment of a dedicated international automobile industry, BMW South Africa has exported cars. In 2014, BMW 3 Series Sedan exports from Plant Rosslyn increased by over 17% which clearly solidified BMW South Africa’s position as the country’s leading exporter of premium vehicles.

BMW South Africa directly and indirectly employs over 43,000 people: more than 3,700 associates at the plant and at the national sales organisation, as well as over 3,700 dealership staff and some 36,000 first-tier supplier employees. In 2014, the more than 2,900 workers at the Rosslyn plant built 68,771 BMW 3 Series Sedans for the local and export markets.

Intermittent cabin heater - issues

My 1999 328i cabin heater is "gludgy"; sometimes LOTS of heat, other times hardly any. The temperature setting of the climate control seems to have little influence. Might the sensor be at fault? Is it located behind those little grills that flank the controls on the faceplate? Should I blow some compressed air in there to "rearrange" any accumulated dust/hair/etc ... or maybe the reverse/use a vacuum to get it out of there? Or should the unit itself be removed from the dash, disassembled and cleaned? BTW, what is the difference between that unusual air control (vertical knurled wheel) between the air outlets middle of dash, and the "O" button to the right of the climate control? I understand that the knurled wheel regulates the mixture of interior and exterior air supply to the heater, but doesn't the O button do the same thing, like the more usual "recirculation" button?

High flow cat.

Does anybody know where to purchase a redback high flow cat?

320d issues

Hi guys,

Recently purchased a 2001 320d pre facelift, car was running fine but had too much oil in it, did an oil and filter change last night. The car wouldn't start at all, completed dead no sounds from start motor and not cranking, all lights work fine, starter motor was tested on the volt meter and rocked in gear to check it was free. My mate has bmw software and it brought up a key fault which was cleared. But the car would not let the software speak to the engine (immobilisation due to key?) the central locking is very dodgy too, doesn't really work with the key and for example the key fob lock button pops the boot! And is all generally pretty all over the joint. The keys have also been have been messed with as both are taped up. I disconnected the battery for half an hour and when reconnected bang started straight up as normal. Thought I'd turn it off to ensure it would start again and you guessed it. Wouldn't start ***128545;***128545;. So I'm thinking now only option is 120 for key from bmw and probably diagnostics at 60 ***128557;***128557;, is this likely to work ? I don't even care if the central locking doesn't work I'd just like my car to start ! Thanks in advance for any advice help or opinions !

Need input about graphic cards

So my old desktop PC is having some lags and I'm planning some updates, the actual config is:

Motherboard: ASRock A785GXH/128M

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (2400 Mhz)

RAM: DDR2 4GB total (2x 2GB)

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce G210 512Mb

I don't give the PC an extreme use, no games at all, once in a while an old version of NFS (Porsche) and some San Andreas, I use it almost for internet browsing and audio editing.

My plan is to improve the RAM (at least 8GB total DDR2) and I would like a better graphics adapter but here is where I get lost so any input would be appreciated, I don't want a super duper mega card, just a normal one (maybe 1GB or 2) that doesn't lag with 5, 6 instances of chrome.

Thanks!

Interseting Cooling Situation

I have an interesting situation, and I have been reading threads for the past several weeks and couldn't find a similar issue. Most threads speak of running cooler than normal, running too hot, or inconsistent fluctuations. My temp rises to operating temp as it should and stays in the middle without fluctuating. The coolant level is full, but still gives me a code P0128. Most threads recommend to change the thermostat but it seams that its functioning properly since the temp is at proper operating levels and doesn't fluctuate. It is neither running too cold or over heating; it is consistently in the middle after it reaches the proper temp. I'm not about to do a complete cooling system overhaul if I don't need to as it was done about 20K miles ago. Could it be the coolant level sensor or the coolant temp sensor? I'm not sure where the issue lies. Any ideas?

GM5, lock actuator, or linkage?

I know this problem has been addressed before but nobody really had a definitive answer. I would probably say that it is because some things might have been lost in translation and so I have attached a video with the problem I am having.

S85 Swap DIY

I plan on doing an S85 swap in my 2006 BMW 330ci and I would like to know what do I need exactly to complete this swap. I know I need a S85 engine, but would I be able to use the same transmission that already comes with my car or do I have to get the transmission that comes with the S85. Also, what about the drive shaft, do I have to change that to and the diff? What kind of wiring harness do I need? I just need a list of all the parts.

Is the bmw vin pattern super secret or something?

I've been wanting to use my programming skills to do something that I'd enjoy so I decided to make a bmw vin decoder. I have seen an older document floating around the forums, but instead contacted bmw na directly to get the legit info straight from the source. Bmw na told me to contact the dealer. 35 calls to separate dealers and I still haven't come up with this information. Kinda frustrated at the people I've been talking to. I know it's just a matter of getting in touch with the right person but damn what the heck do these people do all day? Reminds me how hard it must be to start a business, dealing with corporate nitwits all day who can't come up with any solutions or suggestions. Sorry just venting lol. Is the vin pattern documentation like super secret or something?

m3 e46 gear position sensor problem

I have a 2003 m3 with the yellow cog light on. Replaced gear position sensor twice and the problem still persists. I have reset the light with icarsoft scanner. It comes back on after reset. I have tried 4 different salmon relays, no difference. The car shifts and drives fine but can not get rid of cog light. One answer was to check compression spring. What is this and where is it located. Any other advice will be helpful.

Which car should I sell?

Thinking about buying another Wrangler or Silverado, but we have 3 cars already.

Should I keep the Boxster, or the e90 330i? The 330 is a grey autotragic with black interior and sport package. It's an OK car, but the Boxster is more fun and gets more looks from gay guys and teenaged girls.

Derrick Rose injured yet again (not a typo)

It was confirmed last night that he tore his miniscus for the 2nd time in 15 months. One has to wonder where the Bulls intentions with him will be going forward at this point. He seems destined to become the next Grant Hill or Penny Hardaway, if he even manages to hang around for that long.

Damaged Oil Cooler Exchanger.

A couple weeks ago While on the road my fan clutch was spinning while I was driving. For some particular reason it came to a dead stop after I hit a certain rpm, which caused my fan to snap, making a loud BANG.

I step out my car and noticed a war under my hood. My expansion tank cracked, oil cooler got damaged, fan shroud, and both Fan clutch and the fan were everywhere. After cleaning it up and taking an L, I ordered all the parts. And did a DIY. Drained the coolant, and reinstalled my new expansion tank. Then my new fan clutch and fan blades and fan shroud. Ordered a new ATF, and Tempature sensor since I thought, might as well. Lastly I have this one issue.

I cant seem to take out my oil Cooler from the oil cooler hoses.

As you can see the bit of plastic from my fan got embedded in the oil cooler. I did research prior, BMW part 5436 is a tool used to disconnect the line from the oil cooler itself, but my plastic tip is broken from the oil cooler.

Now I'm at a lost, what should I do? Is there a way to seal it? I got a new oil cooler to replace it, if need be, but very difficult to remove.

Out with the old (Battery) and in with the new

After 6 years and 2 months the Duralast 49DL is toast. This winter has finally taken it's toll, but pretty good for an inexpensive after market battery that was widely recommended by many member of this site. Thank you! I think that was my third battery in 15 years including the original and 2 49DLs. With the 49 DL no longer available I have modernized and gone with the BOSCH Platinum Series AGM Battery Group Size H7/L4/94R for $150 at Pep Boys. 3 hours of research for a 5 minute installation. Stealership (JMK) parts department wanted $228 for a lesser battery. Also considered the Autocraft Platinum AGM from Advanced Auto Parts and the Duralast H7 AGM from AutoZone with similar specs. I figured I can't go wrong with Bosch, the specs were all similar and they are probably all made in the same factory so I went with the best deal. The fit actually seems better than the Duralast including the vent tube location and no need for a shim on top. After 15 years I still get excited about fixing and upgrading my car. Thanks for the forum to share my happiness. :)

Radiator question

Ok, so over the weekend on my 03 330ci I replaced water pump, thermostat, upper and lower rad hoses, expansion tank, converted to hydraulic tensioner, swapped the water pump pulley for an aluminum one, as well as the mechanical-electric fan swap. It all went great, couldn't have asked for an easier time. However, when I had everything off I noticed that in the little elbows where the rad hoses connect to the radiator itself, there was a lot of crud in there. It was easily scraped off with a screwdriver, but for the most part I left it alone. There was nothing in the old expansion tank, nothing in the old rad hoses, nothing on the old water pump or in the block cavity, and nothing caked in the old thermostat. I haven't owned this car long, so I made sure to do all of this to make sure everything was up to snuff. I noticed when draining it, the coolant was green, like you would get at autozone or wallmart :thumbdwn:, not blue like it needs to be. I'm wondering, :loco: is this stuff is additives from improper cooling, or maybe mineral deposits from bad water, what do you guys think? I couldn't get any pics unfortunately, but it looked a lot like when hard water with a lot of minerals leaves a grime around a water faucet, or something like that. But with the green coolant I'm not sure. I Made sure to put blue coolant back in, and have checked a few times since and haven't noticed any grime floating around in the tank. My worst fear is that the prior owner had a leaking radiator and poured a bottle of stop leak in it :thumbdwn: I hate when people do that. And if that turns out to be the case, I will be replacing it entirely pretty soon. I guess my questions are, A) what do you think this stuff was? And B) do I need to start looking at replacing the radiator preventatively? And if so, how soon? Thanks a bunch guys. Y'all take care.

Poly CAB bushings

Any of you fine gentlemen ever use poly front control arm bushing (specifically AKG) ? I'm looking to replace mine and want something w/increased incontrol and handling but don't want it to feel like a track car, I want to keep that BMW ride, if you know what I mean. Cheers, Matt

NYPD instructed to "close eyes" during tense situations

http://ift.tt/1Gnvkwy

Cops should “take a deep breath’’ — and close their eyes — when dealing with angry people, according to the NYPD’s new “retraining’’ program.

The potentially dangerous advice is part of a $35 million “smart policing’’ primer by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton that most of the cops who have gone through it say is completely useless.

One cop who sat through two full-day programs called them “not realistic’’ and “pretty silly.”

At one point during the lectures, the cop said, those in attendance were given breathing exercises to learn how to calm down — even when facing someone who could pose a threat to their safety.

“They said if you find yourself in a situation that’s getting heated, take a step back, close your eyes and take a deep breath,” he said.

“That’s pretty funny — that I would close my eyes in a tense situation.”

Another cop called the lectures “smoke and mirrors” to appease the public.

“They want you to stop and think about everything before you do anything, but a lot of times cops have to make a split-second decision, and they don’t have the luxury of stopping and thinking,” the cop said.

The officer said he was paid overtime to attend the retraining program. Other cops have been going to training sessions instead of their regular shifts, sources said.

Both cops said they — and everyone they know — gave the lectures low marks on surveys they filled out after the program.

The Post reported exclusively on Sunday that many cops have been falling asleep in their seats as they listen to the lectures at the brand-new, $750 million Police Academy in Queens, and that about 80 percent gave the program negative reviews afterward.

A high-ranking NYPD source said the lectures were “boring” and a “big disappointment” to cops who thought they were going to learn “real, hands-on, quality training on how to deal with a hostile prisoner or arrestee.”

De Blasio has promised that his retraining program “will have an impact on millions of people, because every interaction that every officer has with their fellow New Yorkers after they are trained again will be different.”

New 330Ci owner

Hi all,

I'm excited to join the e46 club and this forum as I have just bought a 2004 330Ci. I have always been a car guy and a BMW fan, and after driving a few during the past years (e46, e60 and e92) I knew that I had to own one at some point. Well I just moved to California and fell in love with this 330Ci. Suits the climate ;) I would have liked to find a manual but after sitting in traffic on the 405 for an hour I am actually kind of happy that I got the automatic. We'll see, maybe the next one will be a manual.

Anyways, it had just shy of 118k miles when I bought it, clean title and a good service history. I'll add some pics below! See you around the forums.

Why the straight-six engine is making a comeback

The accountants want fewer cylinders. The engineers want smooth engines. The compromise? A good straight six. Let us explain.

Interesting article from R&T, even if they get a touch loose with some details, the basic gist is right on. I'd much rather have a smaller I6 than a bigger I4 for the NVH qualities alone. Loved the little 2.3l I6 in my '79 323i (kind of the M3 of its day). Maybe the classic BMW 3 series layout of an I6 in a longitudinal RWD chassis makes more practical and economical sense for the future than one might think.

I'd imagine an I6 might even be amenable to cylinder deactivation if one needs to eke out that last .1mpg whereas I'd think an already hoary four banger -- with all cylinders firing -- would be downright unbearable with just two jugs clomping away.

Red Oil Light On (Solid)

Hey everyone,

This afternoon, I started my 2001 330i sedan and saw the RED oil-can light on the dash.

Even though it's known to cause a flickering warning light, I am going to replace the oil pressure switch soon and post results.

Here's what I know:

- It's 10 degrees F

- This light indicates low oil pressure

- I have never seen it before, flickering or otherwise (I've owned the car over 1 year)

- The oil level is fine (checked w/ dipstick)

- I turned off and restarted the car, no luck

- I unplugged/replugged/wiggled the oil pressure switch (back of O.F. Housing) and restarted the car, no luck

- I'm unsure if the engine sounds different than normal

The important part of my situation is that I'm trapped 2 hours away from home with only very basic tools. I know that if it isn't the pressure switch, it's likely that some aspect of the oil pump has failed - be it a sheared shaft, nut coming loose, etc.

Some questions I have are:

- How safe is it to run the engine for a few seconds at a time for tests/moving around the driveway?

- Is there a reliable way to discern if this is a 'false positive' vs. if I actually have an oil pressure issue without an oil pressure gauge

- If I got a hold of a gauge and checked the oil pressure, what exactly should I look for?

- If I did in fact have low or no oil pressure, what would the engine sound like when running?

- It's a long shot, but is there an "easy" way to check the oil pump and its nut?

Thanks all.

Avant Garde M310

Hey all. Currently im running avant garde 310 in this setup on stock "sport" suspension

19x8.5 ET-35 front with 235/35/19

19x9.5 ET-40 rear with 255/35/19

This setup fits perfectly and during troubleshooting for issues involving wobble, a few shops are dead set on trying to tell me its that my rear tire size causing the issue, them being "too small" (though I know its not, stock wheels 18's make the same noise). That's resolved anyway.

I plan on installing H&R race springs, while Im sure this has been asked over a billion times I cant find an answer given my exact offset on what size tires I can run, the wider the better without resorting to fender mods(yeah its easy to do but I'm exploring my options)

Any helps or ideas would be appreciated.

battery, alternator, or ...

I'm a newbie here, I've done some research on the forums, but could use some help diagnosing the following:

- The other night, I stalled backing up a hill into a parking spot (I have a manual 2002 325i).

- Afterwards, the car would not start, and there were some weird electrical noises: CD player churning, heater fan turning on, etc.

- After waiting a few minutes, the car started, so I bee-lined it home (about 20 minutes over the SF Bay Bridge)

- On the way, the battery light came on/off on the dash for a bit, then the lights and turn signals started to dim. I was luckly to make it off of the bridge/highway.

- Finally the car died two blocks from home, I pushed it to my driveway's edge. There was no overheating involved, the temperature reading was normal.

- I was able to start the car yesterday AM and pull it into the driveway, I'm not clear on why there was enough charge after the car rested.

From the above, I'm not sure on whether it's the battery (don't know how old it is), alternator, or voltage regulator. Is there an easy way to discern this, or do I have to take it to my mechanic?

I'm unemployed, so I'd prefer to replace the battery myself, and possibly tackle the alternator (I've done one a long time ago), but I want to properly diagnose the problem first.

Thanks for any help, and my apologies if this is covered elsewhere on the site.

Manual 5 spd, not so smooth shifting

I drive a 2001 325CI with 147 miles. No problems of any sort. But one thing I would like to address is the rough feeling shifter. It doesn't shift smoothly. It feels a little notchy or clunky. Other than that trans has no problems and runs smooth. I live in Tx and whether its 100deg or 30deg out, it doesn't make a difference.

I've searched the forum for threads explaining possible causes but haven't found any. Does anyone have any idea as to what causes rough shifting and any links as to how to remedy the issue?

P.S. I changed the trans and diff fluid a few moths ago as regular maintenance.

Overfilled my E46 318i Coolant Tank

Hello, im 24 years old and I'm New to BMW's and this forum. I bought my e46 318i 2004 last week so everyday i come here to learn something new, yesterday I was driving to home and saw my temp indicator almost went to red, I was stopped so when I started running again the temp wen to normal again (12 o clock for me) and the coolant light turned ON, that moment I Knew I needed to go home and refill the coolant tank. I parked in Home and decided to refill the coolant tank in the morning. As a newbie I went and filled the tube all way top  then had to drive to work. At some miles from home I saw the coolant light again and thought :censor: I wasted my new car. I stopped right away and opened the coolant tube to check if the coolant was missing, and it spilled a lot of coolant, frightened I sealed the thing again. After a while the car temp started to go a little high again and I stopped again, then i saw some coolant coming out of one side of the tank right in the top.

My question is, Is this normal when you overfilled the coolant? Have I messed my new car ? Will I need a new tank? Im in the office and still have not checked the car, im letting it cool down... please give me some advice...

Kevin Durant hates the real MVP meme

http://ift.tt/1p0Eg5t

http://ift.tt/RE5VLj

http://ift.tt/1a1ExjH

Quote:

"You the real MVP."

That line was said with a lot of emotion, but it has turned into an Internet craze.

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant included that signature line during his acceptance speech for the 2013-14 NBA MVP award. During that speech, Durant called his mom the real MVP because he wouldn't be where he is today without her.

It was an incredibly touching moment that saw a son try to hold back tears as he thanked his mother. If it's not the most emotional speech ever given by a professional athlete, it certainly ranks near the top of the list.

However, what happened next caught Durant by surprise.

The Internet had a blast with the "You the real MVP" line and has turned it into a meme that is used anytime something good happens in a person's life.

I was like, man, that was a real emotional moment for me, and you making a joke about it! Like: Damn. Y'all don't really believe in s--t. You don't have no morals or nothing. You don't care about nothing but just making fun.

I was serious as hell saying that, you know what I'm saying?

can someone measure a passenger side axle for me M3

i am comparing the m3 axles (drivers side ended up salvagable) to my 325xit axles and the length for the drivers side is the same, meaning i dont have to use m3 axles, if the passenger side is the same length too.

not only would this save me headache and money on parts, it would open up the lsd options for non-m owners.

the traditional way to swap to lsd has been to do the entire rear end and driveshaft.

if i am correct then it would mean only parts required to go lsd would be subframe, diff, driveshaft. that is a lot cheaper endeavor than buying an entire m3 rear.

if you shoot me your email i can send pics for reference

thanks in advance

Kevin

Considering an E55 (w211) - Input Welcome

I'm strongly considering the purchase of an 05 E55 (W211). The car appears to be clean, no accidents, etc. Still yet to do a PPI, but the maintenance potential is my cause for concern. Reading through forum posts gives some insight, but really it varies on a car by car basis.

Car has 70k miles on it and I don't drive more than 4k / year, likely selling it after 1-2 years and moving onto something else.

Given my usage I think it is probably a pretty low risk move, plus since there won't be many miles I could potentially break even if the deal is good to begin with.

My intent was to buy an old 4Runner and somehow I've convinced myself I can delay for 2 years and drive an AMG if it doesn't cost a mint.

Any input is welcome.

Gun Case help

Looking to buy a hard case for my Sig 516 Patrol. Collapsed it's 32.5" and fully extended it's 36". Trying to decide between a 36" or 42" case. Any of you guys go with a 36" and end up wishing you had gone with a larger case? I've narrowed it down to the Pelican 1700 ($225, Interior: 35.75" x 13.5" x 5.25"), Pelican 1720 ($225, Interior: 42" x 13.5" x 5.25"), SKB iSeries 3614 ($230, Interior: 36.5" x 14.5" x 5.5") or a SKB iSeries 4217 ($297, Interior: 42.5" x 17.0" x 7.5"). Also looking to potentially store my Glock 32 handgun in the same case for travel or range transpo, which also has me leaning towards a larger 42" like the iSeries 4217. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

P1746 Code showing up PLEASE HELP.

New to this site and alreasy need help.

Purchased a 1998 328I that needed a head gasket.

Fixed the issue myself, car runs awesome, here is the issue.

If I reset the ecm, I can drive all over the place hundreads of miles with no issue's at all runs great. The minute I turn the key off and let the car sit for any amount of the time, the next time I start it up, I get a check engine light and the cog of death for limp mode. It will stay in limp mode unless I reset the ecm again. If I reset the ECM on the spot, lights go away car runs normal all over the place again until I shut it off, the the lights again on restart.

Im only getting one code every time- P1746 Transmission controll module output stage.

I dont think its with the trans because wouldn't it come on while im driving if it was?

I have also been disconnecting the battery while working on other things, could this have anything to do with it?

I am also wating on new manifold to down pipe studs (on order) so I have one out of three bolts holding my downpipe together until they arrive, no reall exhaust leak that I can hear.

Any help is appreciated thank you!!

Power Steering Minor Groan

Hate to be blowing this forum up with all these 'issues'.

Anyways, I've never noticed it until today, because I always play music in my car but while warming up my car on a lunch break I noticed when i barey put resistance on the wheel and slightly turn it a very quiet but apparent groan is occurring. I've checked my fluid in the past couple days and like I said I doubt the noise is new but I'm just now taking note of it. Has anyone had experience with re manufactured p/s pumps? I have no problem putting in a new pump and all new hoses if it will take this noise away!

I've already done a fluid flush/new reservoir when I replaced my pressure hose.

should bmw enter nascar?

I gotta say.. I've not watch in a long long time. used to as a kid quite often. BMW definitely makes a car that could enter, they have a v8. and I would watch because I'm definitely a bmw fan. what do you guys think?

Cooling system question after overhaul

Hey what's going on everyone? I just have a quick question about the cooling system. Back story about a months ago my top radiator hose blew off while idling on the coldest day in Boston. So I just used a hose clamp and replaced it, bleed it and the hose blew off two days later. So I ended up doing a full system overhaul. Replaced the et, cap, all hoses, Water pump, both thermostats , aux fan sensor (lower hose plug in), fan clutch, radiator, mounting plate, and water pump pulley. So I finally finished yesterday we had like 5 blizzards here in Boston so all the parts took forever. I bled the system and she started right up took the car out for a drive for about 45 mins and everything was good no leaks needle was at 12 o'clock for most of the drive and the temp never went higher than 92. (I could definitely tell though the car still had some air in the system because the needle moved a hair to right and right back down). So today I drove to work and home like 5 minute ride and checked it again. This time it seemed that there was coolant coming from under the et cap. Along with hearing air coming out. Finally the question is If I overfilled the system with coolant (which I know I did), will this cause the cap to release pressure along with the extra coolant in the system?

New to e46Fanatics

Just saying hello. Now driving a 03 330Ci and loving it. Picked it up in October with 71200 miles on it Dinan intake and muffler. Spec Tune - EWS Removal

Since none wants to follow directions, I am doing it.

Per Jason, FB Group discussion about EWS removal discussion is posted here.

Issue Raised : Spec Tune has EWS related code as-is from factory.

Issue Background: A number of shop owners and racers claim EWS is unnecessary on our racecars and it can further cause loss time and money when this "buggy" unit starts showing issues.

Proposition : Make EWS removal an option and amend rulebook.

Discussion continues. (I am just posting it here, not a part of discussion)

Fuel Pump Connector Pinouts

My 2003 E46 330i is not starting. Fuel pump does not appear to get 12V on any of combination of the 4 connector contacts when ignition is turned on. I'd like to apply 12V to the pump itself to see if it runs but i don't know which contacts to apply the 12V to. I assume that 2 of the contacts are for fuel level sensor and the other 2 are for pwr to run the pump. I don't want to damage the fuel level sensor. Long story short, does anyone have an diagram that shows the contact layout of the fuel pump?

Thanks in advance,

R

Limp Mode, Misfire Codes, Idling Smooth?!?!

I have a 2002 330i with Steptronic Trans. As I'm waiting parked at the bank waiting for the next teller in the drive through, I notice I have a "gear with the exclamation mark" warning light. From my understanding this is called limp mode. My car has loss of power and seems to be driving in 3/4 gear. The drive to the bank was smooth, and i NEVER had any issues with the transmission.

I get home, check the codes and I'm getting misfires on cylinder 4,5,&6 (all with fuel cut- off), im getting lean codes (which I've had for a while now), and I'm getting a code about the temperature being too low (something like that), misfire due to low fuel.

Odd thing though, before the limp mode and all of these misfire codes my car would SOMETIMES have slight shaking while in D (for example at a redlight), but I knew it was probably due to the lean codes. But now that I have the limp mode, and all these misfires, my car does not shake AT ALL, its actually idling perfect, only thing is low of power due to limp mode.

So, I switch the ignition coils and boot (not the actual spark plug) of cylinder 3(which was not getting any error code)& and cylinder 4 (one of the culprits), hoping to be able to confirm that I in fact due have a spark plug coil/boot issue. I reset the codes to see if the error will now show cylinder 3 but none of them come back! I drive the car around the block a couple times (maybe about 2-3 miles) but the SES light never comes on. I forced the SES light by unplugging the MAF, but when I read the codes only a "mass airflow sensor" error shows up. When I plug back in the MAF, the car shows no code, no SES light but still getting the limp mode light.

I'm assuming the errors are still there, just that my computer is taking a while to put it back into the data where the odb can see it .

Any suggestions on why I am in limp mode and was/am getting misfire codes (they are not showing up anymore but i assume they are still there)?

I cannot give the exact name of the codes due to the fact none are showing up at the moment.

M3 CSL on a 328i Sedan

I tried searching, couldn't find anything on the 328i, saw some with 323i. Just curious. Just ordered a set of 18x8 / 18.9 CSL Rims, should have asked since I've already bought em, but they have 35mm Offset on F&R. Will they fit on my 328i Sedan?

Cheap parts from some companies

I'm surprised there is not a thread on peoples experience with receiving parts that are really not worth installing on your car......if there is and I am missing something then please correct.

I was under the impression that FCP EURO was a good place to order parts (maybe i just "misremembered) like Roger Clemens. When i was looking at their site I saw the same parts listed with different prices, in this case the expansion tank, just seems like their listings are thrown all over the place with random prices.

I did order the Meyle waterpump and just like someone else said earlier, I got it and the thing really did look like a "cheap child's toy" and it does say 'Original Meyle'. I don't think there is anyway that this thing is not made in China.

I had ordered the plastic propeller or whatever it is called and it was a very cheap metal.

Anyway i am returning it and ordered the Saleri, which a lot of guys recommend and I understand.

Just wanted to share experience and am curious of others experience in their opinion of parts received from any company good or bad.

Good detailing shop in DC area

Car looks like powdered sh*t from the consequences of this horrible weather. I want a full professional detail, like the ones the dealers do when they prepare a Certified Preowned car for sale. Carpets cleaned with hot water extraction, full interior cleaning with protectant, full exterior paint correction and cleaning with clay bar, etc. The works basically. I'm sure there are many options here I just don't know of any. Thanks

E46 330 stock exhaust manifolds and diff

can go very cheap. cats worked fine when they came off the car, will go very cheap I just have no use for them. I also have a 2.93 diff with a 4 bolt input flange, will go very cheap as well.

Hello

Park Distance Control (PDC) info on Ibus (Dynavin N6)

Hello,

I recently installed a Dynavin N6 in my 2004 BMW E46 320i. A great device but the display does not work in combination with my factory installed PDC.

I understand that the PDC display will only function however if my car has the PDC info available on the Ibus. Does anyone know if this info is available on my 2004 320i?

Thanks
