Remote locking not working

I just bought a 2001 E46 and the remote central locking does not seem to work. I tried replacing the battery in both key I received and tried re-syncing the keys to the car but nothing worked. The button on the centre console works fine and the door lock works fine. Can anyone give me any advice.
