Hey all. I'm new on the forum, but I've lurked for years looking up info on my past BMW's. I recently replaced my old 328i that got rear ended with a 330i and I'm having a problem I've seen asked before but never exactly like mine, so here goes...
I purchased my 2003 330i 5 speed manual about six weeks ago. It had a check engine light on that I made the seller take to a shop with me and confirm it was just an 02 sensor. Not a big deal. Other than a little lifter tick, it's pretty mint considering the year and the fact it has 140k on it.
Now, I'm having a problem with it that has just started four days ago. It's a vibration under acceleration that is happening in all gears. I think it's easier to give the facts as bullet points, so here goes...
- The first time it happened, I had been driving it for 10 minutes. Car was fully warmed up.
- I came to a stop and put it in neutral and noticed the idle jumping between 500-900 or so.
- I put it in gear and when I stepped on the gas, there was a severe lack of power and the whole car would shake like it had a completely flat tire (I pulled over to check because that is almost exactly what it felt like)
- I did a U-turn to head back since I was close to home. I came to the next stoplight, put it in neutral, and now the idle was fine
- I pulled away from the light and the problem was gone. Estimated time it happened for: 3 minutes
I drove it home and parked it for the day and then went out at night to see if it happened again. I drove around locally for 30-40 minutes and it didn't do it.
I didn't go anywhere today, so I figured I would do another test at night. I went out to check again, and it did it within 5 minutes of driving. Exact same thing as described above, except this time it did NOT go away after 3 minutes. I drove it 5 minutes back home and it did it the whole way. I just parked it an hour ago.
Since I just bought the car, I haven't done anything to it. I don't know when anything was (or wasn't) replaced.
By looking at these forums, I know it could be a million different things. I figured I would check here before I did anything else. Anything beyond checking fluids, changing oil, and replacing headlights (which I did on this car because two days after I bought it, the driver headlight burned out) is over my head.
Feel free to ask any questions. I appreciate any help!
