Greetings miscreants, just bought myself an 01 330Ci 5 speed. 112k on the clock, and the car *looked* fine.
The more I go over it, the more it seems that it may have been in an accident. Not frame-bendingly bad, but its got evidence (missing D/S fender well liner that the temp probe sits in, paint matched rocker cover that didn't used to be Schwarz, slightly bendy metal bumper insert, paint marks where the fender was moved over on its mounting bolts etc.) Not necessarily the end of the world, but I had a few stupid questions on its behavior in the past 100 miles I've owned it.
1) Driving in the rain, I was sitting at a stop light on the phone. car shudders and when I look down the tach is dropping all the way down to 400 then surging to 1100. Light goes green and I take off and it feels like its running on 5 cyl and low on power, CEL is on. I pull off to a parking lot to finish my convo (job interview, of fuking course it had to happen then). Started the car and it ran fine, no light. No stored codes, didn't come back in 10 more miles of rain driving. Any thoughts? Could it be a temporary vacuum leak induced by either the DISA valve or the CCV system? I don't wanna throw hundreds of dollars towards a "who knows, maybe" kinda solution.
2) traction control light is on. I have a dealer that will do free diags your first time and am going to have them try to pull codes as my car shows nothing on my actron reader. Can those jamokes pull traction fault codes? If not, is there a sticky for tracking that kind of issue down?
3) when I was in the rain I had a...noise that cropped up when letting out the clutch. it was a sharp loud sound, cross between a bang and a rub. I couldn't hear it from the D/S seat but my buddy in the pass seat heard it and recorded it on his phone. It came from the rear of the car. Perhaps some acoustical trick? It happened as I verrrry first started to let out the clutch (less than an inch off the floor) and only when moving. I know my rear diff mount is bad but thats usually a softer clunk. Anyone got one on that? Drove it with my pops a few hours later and we couldn't recreate it.
4) d/s high beam/running light went out temporarily. Stopped to check the bulb, and it was good. Put it back together and it was still dead, hit a bump and it came back on. Dash correctly indicated when it was out and when it came back. Is there any known weak points in that system to check? It bugs me.
I gotta do my front control arm bushings and put it through inspection, then drive the thing and see what the weak points are. I kinda hope this **** resolves itself, but I know that that's never the case hahaha.
