I've been searching around and haven't found the answer i'm looking for. I'm working on swapping a S54 into my 2005 E46 330i and would like to have it BAR certified since I live in the nanny state of California so I can keep it all smog legal.
The guide lines says "same year or newer" engine are allowed, but how do they know what year the engine comes from? There there a VIN number somewhere on the engine? Is it in-printed on the ECU somewhere?
If I got a 2004 S54 (which I think is identical down to the smog equipment to a 2005) what would I need to replace to make it BAR'able in California (or look like a 2005 model to pass)? Or is it just not possible?
The reason I ask is I found a good deal on a 2004 S54 but my car is a 2005.
Anybody have a good answer for me?
thanks!!
