SMG problem! Please help

Hi guys,

I`m new here and i really need your help.

I have a 2004 530i with an SMG/SSG transmission that decided to stop working. (is the same SMG that you guys have on your E64)

100 000miles / 165 000km.



Here is what happened:



One day parking the car i get the message that i can only use R and 1-3 gears. I turned off the engine went to a store and when i came back and started the car, the message was gone. Next day i called my mechanic for an appointment and i was booked for next week.



Since that happened i drove the car every day with no problem, no message etc for about 1 week. One day, going downhill shifting from 4 to 5 the car jumped to N and a hard shifting to 5 and 6 by itself. At the stop light it jumped to N and the engine turned off. I started the engine, put in the 1st gear, push the gas and the car goes backwards.

Put the hazard lights on, wait for the road to clear and get the car on the side of the road.

I turned the engine on and off 5-6 times and i was able to get the car in 1st gear going forward. To get the car going forward i had to put it first in R, than in 1.



Called my mechanic again and told him all this, he rescheduled me. Drove the car for 2-3 days no problem again. On my way to the mechanic at the stop light (temperature outside 20-25C) after 15-20 min of driving, shifted itself to N again and this time i was not able to get it going. Again 1st gear the car went backwards...after that it got stuck to N and could not do anything, no 1, 2 or R...nothing.

I had to call the tow truck which charged me $100 for 5km.



Few days later i get a call from the mechanic saying that is the position sensor but he wasn`t sure. Next day he calls again telling me that i need a new transmission.

He told me that he reprogrammed the transmission, and he was able to drive the car for about 10 min, until the car was warming up, after that the transmission was acting crazy, same story, jumped to N. Car went backwards in 1st gear etc. He had to leave the car parked to cool off to drive it again.



The codes he got are 4f74 and 4f75.



I also purchased what it supposed to be an used SMG transmission with 55000milles from Texas. Waited for it 1 month to show up....It got to Vancouver Canada, and guess what?! It was a regular standard transmission. So there goes $2500. I`m still waiting for my $ back.



Today i changed the salmon and orange relays and one thing happened.

It was stuck in N. Now i can get into 1st gear but the car goes backwards.



When i put it on R i can hear the pump working like something is trying to grab on to something else. I don`t know how to explain that.



One of these days i will try to fix the leak that i have on the slave cylinder. (saw that today)





Please let me know if you have any thoughts.
