Hi all,
As a newbie I just thought I'd post a bit of info which may be helpful if you have to fit a replacement m57 engine in your e46.
I just bought a replacement used engine from a 530d saloon to fit my 330d touring and discovered the following differences.
1) Both engines are 2000 year and m57d30
2) The 5 series engine needed the block drilled and tapped for one of the engine mounts to transfer from the 3 series car.
3) the engine wiring harnesses are different as the 5 series is routed off the back of head, and the 3 series off the side.
4) the front engine lifting eye needs changing otherwise it fouls the main vacuum servo pipe.
5) dipstick tubes are different.
6) the alternators between 3 and 5 series differ with a two pin connection on one and three pin on the other.
7) inlet manifolds were different in my case with no swirl flaps or actuators on the 5 series, but needed both on the 3.
That's about all.
Hope it helps someone.
