Oxygen Sensor, Sudden idle problem with BMW 318I M43 engine.

Hi Everyone

There are many threads about this but i just want to make sure if i am on the right track before i go buy parts ....etc.

i have a 2000 E46 BMW 318I with an M43 engine. its done 150000kms and it is a RHD. a few days ago drove it and parked outside in the cold for a couple of hours and when restarted it the idle was all over the show (going up and down between 500 and 900 rpm) and the car was about to stall but it didnt. on cold mornings when i start it, it stalls immediately but when i try again it goes and i drive it but whenever i stop the idle would be really rough until the engine heats up. been trying different things and i notice that whenever i switch on the AC the idle goes up to 900rpm and stays there (which makes it a bit easier to drive), also it is steptronic and though the idle is rough at all times it seems worse on D and R than P and N. the car was really smooth prior to that incident a few days ago so this is all sudden and been going for few days now.

i had a diagnostic done on it and the following error came up

DME -8D DME oxygen sensor control, control limit (EUIII code: P0170) - rich stop ---- currently present ---- oxygen sensor before catalytic converter.

this brings me to the oxygen sensor, do these just break suddenly like that? what does the rich stop bit mean? is this the same as the lambda sensor? there are a lot of these sensors selling on e-bay but for the M54 engine would these fit M43? also there seems to be a post cat and a pre cat are they interchangeable? or each one is a different sensor?

sorry for the noob questions i just havent had much exposure to this kind of problem before lol

thanks

Karam
