Lights going blank on dashboard and car stopped reversing

It has happened twice now and was hoping to get some idea



I put my e46 320i 2001 sedan into reverse, the R light was on and I was reversing fine, but then the car stopped, it was still running but would not reverse. The R on the dash had gone blank and nothing was there, no P or N or D. I put the car back into park then into reverse again and everything was find. this has happened twice now and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem. My radio also was completely blank once (I did not have it off), it was still playing fine and all the buttons worked but it was completely blank.
