Oil leak

Working on a 2001 330xi 5 speed. I have at least one oil leak that I am chasing. MAYBE two. Anyway, put the car up on stands, and with engine degreaser and brake clean, cleaned oil off of everything that was wet. Front of the engine, oil pan, rack, the square tube sub-frame, the diff, and all around the transmission. The dropped a small bottle of dye in the engine. After driving the car for 30 miles, I parked it overnight in my shop. This AM it was back up on stands. Plenty of oil streaks, and because of the dye, I could determine that it was all engine oil, and none from the front diff. The was NO oil on the front of the oil pan but there was oil on the bottom of the pan, and all over the inner part of the diff housing and all around the bottom of it. It APPEARS to be coming from the area where the diff is mounted to the oil pan. Sooooo ...............

1) How common is this?

2) Of all the 36s and 46s I have worked on, I have yet to deal with the oil filter housing leak I have read so much about. I would think that if THAT was the source, oil would be all over the front of the engine, but is not.

3) I have looked around the CCV and its hoses, and it's dry. I did replace that last year, but have not inspected it up close yet. But, with no codes or driveability issues, I seriously doubt anything is adrift.

4) Anybody dealt with a leak at that o-ring? #8 in the link below -
