I wanted to relate my experience dealing with an oil separator problem.
I just recently had my OS replaced and what a face lift for my performance.
My symptoms were:
Sluggish performance.
Poor gas mileage.
Random exhaust smoke at start up.
Random yellow oil indicator lamp while driving when I knew the oil level was good.
Oil consumption.
The engine was knocking and pinging like it had bad gas, which i believed was bad gas before I fixed the OS.
When I drove it hard, like freeway speeds, it would get worse. My suspicion is: The harder it is driven, the more the oil is getting gummed up and not making its way back to the crankcase, which is not good, and more oil gets into the combustion chamber too.
So anyway it is driving like a new car now.
If you are having these symptoms you may have a bad oil separator system, which is a very common problem, especially in a cold climate.
