Help! My 02 325xi (225,600miles young) was running beautifully last night; as always. This morning I went to go to dunks with the lady and I noticed the fuel gauge moving around: I shrugged it off, after all it was 94 degrees out. Two minutes later, as I started up a hill, the car completely lost power, and died on the hill. I rolled down, started the car back up and made it up the hill with a running start! As I kept driving, I noticed it had no power, in gear it would barely accelerate, even at WOT, out of gear it would revv somewhat fine. Anyways, on my way home a few minutes later, it died completely on my street.
It acted exactly like it was out of fuel, would crank just fine, and start only for a second, idle rough, then die again. While it was idling for those split seconds (450-500rpms) giving it gas would only cause it to die quicker. It would do this over and over and sometimes not start at all. I put two gallons of fuel in, still no luck. Had it towed to the shop, any ideas what it could be? Fuel pump? Head gasket? Fuel sending unit?
I couldn't hear the fuel pump running, removed rear seat, checked fuses under dash, even did a static discharge test. I scanned the car and found a manufactures specific code; misfire with low fuel.
Maybe it was bone dry of fuel, and the two gallons wasn't enough?
I was a VW mechanic for a couple years, but I can't figure this damn thing out!!
