1999 328i with an auto.
I have done a lot of catch up maintenance on this. I was getting the getting the cog of death and "gear 5 incorrect ratio" code when I would get up to highway speeds. I could clear the code while driving, shift in to neutral and then no more issues. I recently put a transmission filter in it. I was only able to get 5-5.5 quarts in the transmission when I drove it home due to my hand pump breaking. But it shifted great and no codes or limp mode.
I got the car home, lifted it up level and proceeded to fill the transmission up properly. and it took almost another two quarts. Took it for a test drive and everything seemed fine excepted it was shifting a little harder.
A day later, drive the car again and I'm getting fits with the "gear 5 incorrect ratio"now. I can clear the code while driving and all is well.
I'm under going some other work on the car this weekend and while jacking the car up, I noticed two leaks by the trans. One leak is the selector rod seal, not a big deal to fix. The other is the harness going into the back of the trans.
I have been doing tons of reading and I'm not sure which way to go. I have noticed that if I do some "city driving" before I get on the highway, I usually don't have any issues.
Do I need to drop the pan again and put new speed sensors in it? Do I need to find a way to clean the harness? Is there a DIY on this? How do I fix the leak? I'm not sure how to search for that particular leak.
Sorry for the long read but any input would be great.
