Interview attire - okay to go casual?

Okay, this may be obvious to some of you, but I want a second opinion.

I went in for a job interview and the HR lady told me specifically that business casual clothing was appropriate. So, I wore slacks, a nice shirt tucked in, dress shoes, and a belt. No tie, no suit.

When I showed up, everyone in the building was wearing jeans and a t-shirt or button-up shirt. Managers/higher-ups wore a dress shirt and jeans. I think I only saw one person wearing slacks, and no one had their shirt tucked in. The hiring manager specifically told me it was a good thing I didn't wear a suit, because it doesn't really fit the culture of the business. I'm fine with that since I hate dress clothes anyway.

So, I may have to go back for a second round of interviews if they still want me. Should I wear the same type of thing as the first time, or should I wear what they wear to try to fit in more and be more comfortable?

So far, my friends told me to wear the nicer clothes until I get the job. What do you think?
