Haven't been on in a while but I recently picked up an 04 m3 smg 107k mi. Great service records from mini corsa. Picked up on 9/15/14 and went to the track yesterday 9/21/14
Car is completely stock minus the ec7 wheels and ventus v12's. No vanos issues or noises and a recent valve adjustment as well as fresh tws 10/60. Track temps were a cool 80* and it was my first session of the day and about 5 laps in at fontana auto club infield. Car temps were good and I went in for a hot lap. Coming out of a turn I was at the the top of second when I heard a metallic clapping followed by loss of rear traction from the oil spill. I spun off into the dirt/grass and while continuing to roll I turned off the motor. The motor was still idling until I turned it off, sounded like a diesel though.
When. I got out to inspect, I saw shards of metal resting on the intake manifold and a trail of oil and coolant. :(. I'll be going in for a motor swap soon but I'm wondering what could have caused this and what preventative maintenance could prevent this on my new/used motor?
I'm aware of the vanos issues but there was no metal on the valve train. Possibly thinking it was a frozen rod bearing but what would cause it to suddenly freeze with no prior symptoms.
There was one symptom while on track, which I'm not sure is related. The last couple laps, while trail braking, I would lose power steering until I got off of the brakes
Thanks guys
