320d warm start saga

Hi,

I'm looking for advice and opinions on this.

Long description sorry but I want to get all the info down:

Our 2002 320D with 125k miles on it started giving a problem around 6 weeks ago.

  • It would start perfectly, every single time, from cold.

  • It would drive perfectly once started, no loss of power, no shuddering.

  • If you stopped the engine and started it again within a few minutes it would start fine.

  • If you stopped it, waited more than a few minutes, maybe 10 to 20 minutes and the engine had started to cool slightly it would then not start. It would crank but not fire.

  • The temperature gauge had to go right back down, as soon as it got to around the top of the blue line it would start again fine and could be driven no problem.

A scan at a dealers showed no fault codes and they couldn't find a problem. After 1.5 days they gave us the car back, it still had the same problem and we were none the wiser.

Researching similar symptoms gave 4 or 5 main likely causes. We had to try something so picked up a crankshaft sensor and had a garage fit it. €42 part+€150 labour.

This didn't fix it so we found another garage specialising in BMWs and after talking to them on the phone got a good feel for them. They kept it for a few days trying to recreate the issue and diagnose it. They swapped in a fuel pump relay from another 320 they had there and tested again, this time they couldn't recreate the problem so they swapped in a new fuel pump relay and we took it back. €150 (part and labour).

It seemed to drive and start fine (even from warm/cooling) for 2 days after that but then wouldn't start again for my wife from warm on Friday night.

I took a look yesterday, it started fine from cold but I noticed a new rattle from the engine bay, popped the hood and found both serpentine belts off and a hose (don't know the name) disconnected at the top of the radiator fan that seems to be related to the louvres at the back of the rad.

I reattached the serpentine belts, more so for experience than anything else, as it was clear that crankshaft pulley was misaligned and had way too much play in it. Sure enough the belts came straight off again on next start up. Looking online I can get a replacement crankshaft pulley for anywhere from €100 - €300 depending on whether I want OEM or not and I'd be happy to give a go at replacing it (in general this is my first maintenance experience other than oil changes).

My question is, I'm not even sure at the moment if the warm start problem is fixed, and I'm wondering if it's worth spending more on at this stage on another part and repair when I can't be sure that will leave it running fine again.

The tax & NCT/MOT are up soon and it needs 3 new tires. We've spent around €400 so far and the crankshaft pulley would bring that up to around €600.

The car is probably only worth €2500 - €3000 at a guess. Would you cut your losses at this stage? Do you think that the warm start could possibly have been fixed by the fuel pump relay and it was something to do with the crankshaft pulley problem that caused the last warm non-start? To me it doesn't seem likely these two are related but I have very little experience with the real mechanics of engines.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated as we're starting to run out of patience and money at this stage. The future is looking like a lot of cycling until we can save for a replacement!

John
