Does a new remote control require professional programming?

Hi,



i currently have only one remote key for my M3 e46 2005, was seeing that in ebey new keys are relatively cheap compared to what my dealer charges ($500), so my question is: does a new remote control require professional programming besides cutting to work properly? or could it work just by cutting it to be identical to my original and following this steps?
