Oops... Regular Unleaded

Hey Guys,

I'll start off by saying that I have had my '04 330Ci for about 6 years now, and have religiously put Shell Premium in it for the last 55k miles. I ended up having to stop at a Valero today (was running on fumes and there weren't any Shell stations nearby) and filled up the tank while talking on the phone. Pump clunked to a stop and I was surprised to see that it was a little cheaper than normal, and I usually don't wait that long to fill up... Thats weird... Then I realized I had put 15.8 gallons of regular unleaded in... Doh... Karma for cheating on Shell I guess.

Did some research, and most of what I am reading says that the ECU will normally just make some adjustments to prevent premature detonation and that it should probably be OK, others said to throw in some octane additive, other threads said to just start topping off with premium to get the higher octane mixed in quickly.

Now here's a curveball... My check engine light is currently on "due to the external temperature sensor having a compromised solder at the cluster" (as per my BMW mechanic in town). About a year ago when I had this diagnosed, my mechanic said that the check engine light being on would lock down the ECU from making adjustments to the engine, and that I might experience some weird reduced power and rough idle when making big elevation changes (read from San Antonio to Denver), but that otherwise it would be fine to drive with it on. FYI the cluster replacement was a $1200 quote, and I really don't feel like paying that much to turn my check engine light of until someone tells me something catastrophic is going to happen.

Another option might be to syphon out the gas and replace with premium; I have a buddy who might be willing to buy it from me, but that sounds like a whole thing...

ANYWAY I'm rambling... I'd like some opinions from some experts out there on what I should do. Please no circle jerking about how you should always put premium in your high compression blah blah blah.

TL;DR: Accidentally put a full Regular Unleaded in my 330Ci, engine light was previously on which may be an issue, what should I do?

Thanks in advance
