So, I'm at a bit of a loss here at what to do, I'll give a basic rundown of the situation.
I lived in an apartment with my friend for 1 year, we were both on the lease and he (his dad) wrote the rent check every month. I paid my portion in cash, and his dad paid the total. I moved out after 1 year, on the move-out date that I was given. My roommate decided to stay for a couple months extra because he didn't plan to move out in advance, so he extended his lease and his cousin moved in a few days after I left.
Apparently, they either got evicted or did an 'early termination' on the lease, and they didn't pay some fine or penalty. So now, the fine is up to around $500 after 6 months have passed, and a collections agency just called me notifying me of all this craziness. This also explains the fall in my credit score that I couldn't figure out (my credit limit dropped multiple times too.)
Now, I don't think they have any reason to hold me accountable for this fine, mainly because I never signed a contract to extend my lease there, and therefore am not liable for anything that happened as a result of my roommate's lease extension. I even had a 1 month transition period where I was paying double rent, just so I could move out by the move-out date without having to rush.
But still, the collections agency has my name and number, and I'm just as liable as he is, as far as they're concerned.
Also, even if the fine is paid, wouldn't it still affect my credit negatively? I need to figure out how to eliminate my name from this whole shebang, in any way possible.
I tried calling the manager at the old apartment and trying to get some paperwork done, but so far they haven't answered 2 voicemails. The collections agency wants a bunch of paperwork, like four forms that I have to somehow gain access to.
