Low idle

Lately my idle has been really low, around 500-600rpm. And everytime I turn on my car I need to let it warm up for about 3/5 minutes if not my car will turn off after a couple seconds of driving it. But sometimes I do let it warm up and my car will turn off once I come to a complete stop after driving it for a while. I've heard to replace or clean the idle control valve, but is there any other suggestions on what I should do?
