Hello, first time poster, long time lurker :)
So I live on a small island in the English Channel, and there are a surprising amount of M3's. I have owned one in the past, but ended up selling it after splitting up with my girlfriend. Anyways, I know someone who is looking to sell his, but he bought it in a somewhat neglected state, as a project, and has spent the best part of £6,000 on bits...it still needs a lot of cosmetic work, but I'm half tempted to take a punt...
It's a 2001 vert with SMG. 90,000 miles.
Problems:
1. Alloys need refurbing
2. Body work needs sorting - quite a few scrapes and small dents on wings.
3. Roof - a thin cord has snapped on the passenger side 'flap' it looks like someone tried to repair it by tying a knot in it, but this has caused a problem whereby it can't fit through a little metal loop, and so has snapped some abs plastic trim, it now doesn't sit flush next to the window and just hangs down.
4. First time I drove it, it would start only in 2nd and SMG light came on. Just driven it home and light was off and it starts in 1st. Gear change seems much better than my old '05 M3. No where near as 'clunky'...
5. Needs new tyres, and although pads and discs are new...or so the receipt says, the calipers look really tired so need tarting up.
Given the work...and the potential cost. Would you guys pay £4,000? I'm thinking if I spend an additional three on it, at least I'd know it would be sorted...and to my liking etc.

I would appreciate any info, and your thoughts.
