Convertible license plate led lights

Is there a difference between the trunks of the e46 convertible 2001-2003 and 2004-2006? I tried installing aftermarket led license place lamps with the new cover and I cant install the new cover. I heard once that you can only change the bulb on a 2001 vert and not the actual cover/housing.
