Alright everybody, I've searched this topic fairly thoroughly, but it's time to ask for some input. I'll give as much info as I can, so sorry for the length. First, the basics:
2004 330xi automatic, 120k on the clock, performace-wise everything is fine, it idles fine and mpg is normal. No cel/ses light or codes to report. The fluid in both diffs has been flushed, trans fluid and filter changed as well, all this summer, I'll estimate mileage to be 110k. Recently changed the FCABs (driver's side was completely separated) which totally resolved my vibration/wheel shaking during braking, this other underlying issue was already there but has since become much worse. Axels and boots front and rear all look fine and sound fine (no grease or clicking).
And the problem: I first noticed the vibration while accelerating uphill, the FCAB replacement seemed to help cure it for a while actually, but as recent as tonight it has become so bad that under normal acceleration at any speed (level, up/downhill is irrelevant) the entire car shakes (almost like a loose or severely bent wheel), most severely from 2k to 3k, but never really goes away. First thing I did was double check my FCAB brackets, they're tight as can be. Tires are new (within the last month), bolts are tight, and pressures are good as well. Simply letting off the gas pedal doesn't make the vibration go away, lessens the severity though. In fact when decelerating to a stop the issue will persist/worsen as the engine speed changes with gear changes, if slowing to a stop in neutral there is no problem. When placing the car in neutral and coasting the vibration is completely gone, thus making me think driveline somewhere. Accompanying this is a constant vibration when stopped/at idle with trans engaged in gear. RPMs are unaffected by this shaking, however the harder I press the accelerator the worse it gets, it will actually shake the steering wheel and pull the car to the right if I'm getting on it enough.
So I'm trying to narrow my true problem down, and considering all of the following for replacement: motor mounts (I know the xis don't have trans mounts per se so also the transfer case mount), guibo, CSB, and really hoping it doesn't need a rear driveshaft replacement/rebuild yet. In all likeliness all of those will be addressed (save perhaps for the shaft rebuild) this coming year, but I'd like to get input as to what people who have more experience and knowledge then I have to say. I will add that being that it's only got this bad very recently, I haven't crawled under it since my FCAB job, and haven't checked the motor mounts for movement yet either. Obviously since it's an xi I'm driving it daily now and what I don't want is a catastrophic failure on the road, plus I work 12 and 16-hour shifts so it's usually dark for both commutes. All input and opinions are welcome, I've been using this forum pretty much daily since I started driving the car everyday in March and its already been a tremendous help!
Thanks!
