Hi guys, new to forum to post, not new to BMWs and my last M was a '06 M5, which I should have skipped at the time and got myself a nice M3. Now I'm close to getting a used M3 and wanted YOUR thoughts on a specific purchase. Yes, I've been reading threads here a few weeks already to know the major issues and maintenance items, but I've got a unique purchase possibility.
2006 M3 convertible, SMG, only 30k miles. $24,500
Questions:
-What typically wears by/at 30k miles? Brake pads? Rotors?
-Any seals I need to worry about at this age?
-Anything else I be concerned with at 9 years old that might be an age issue vs. mileage issue?
-SMG pump seems to be an issue at approx. 75k miles...is that the correct consensus, so not something I should worry about as a ticking time bomb. Is that correct?
-What do you think of the price overall?
More details if you care to read before replying...
The deal: already talked to a family member in the auto biz, and the price is a little high compared to auction values, but $1200 below the "wholesale lending value" which apparently is a good gauge for the minimum retail price anybody should pay. Car is at a dealership, and apparently they had to invest $3700 after taking in the trade already, and this price is about the "zero" point. Still finding out what all went into that $3700 apart from new tires (Goodyear F1...not the best but might be good for treadwear since 90% of my miles are commuting).
The car: Pretty much spotless. 1st owner serviced at local dealer, oil changes one a year at only ~3,000 mile intervals because that's all they drove annually! At 17k miles in 2012 it sold to the second owner, who put another 13k miles in 2 years, serviced at local performance BMW/Porsche garage. Still need to validate what services, if any, besides oil change and minor inspections were done in the past, and especially if Inspection 1 was already done.
If I had my IDEAL car, it would be 05/06 coupe, maybe ZCP, with up to 75k miles, but I'd almost prefer one that already had VANOS replacement and sub-frame re-enforcement done just to know those were done and out of the way. But those are getting fewer and farther between to find on the west coast with low mileage. This one, with low mileage and a convertible, might be fun for a few years and then resell...still way under typical mileage.
