I went to the dealer yesterday to get a quote on dealing with my illuminated airbag light for my 2001 330ci with 33k.
Turns out the passenger seat airbag is fine, it's the driver's side steering wheel unit that has the issue. The dealer quoted me $1200, of which $1100 is the cost of the new unit. I've seen these parts, used, go for about $200 on Ebay, while Turner Motorsports will special order them for $800 with shipping. Dealer also confirmed that due to the light being on all of my airbags have been disabled. I know that I can get a bypass unit for 20 dollars, but I don't want to void my insurance in the case of an accident (and am also partial to staying alive).
As I live in Tokyo, i'm imagining that that's the reason for the markup. The part number is 32306757891.
My questions are:
1) Am I good with buying a used, but functional unit? As long as it's an actual BMW part they said they'd install it.
2) Does date of manufacture matter? For example, a unit pulled out of an 02 or 03 E46 sedan. They all appear to be the same from a cursory glance.
Any advice on this? I'd really rather not spend over a grand on a part the size of a shoe....
