Can anyone tell me what this part is called please I've searched the numbers on it to

also today I pulled the thermostat an it's just the housing there's nothing there I have been having over heating issues but they don't read on the dash that I'm over heating I can't find any good answers to tell me where to start so I pulled the overflow tank an the thermostat so far but the part in the pictures I don't know it's name or function is it a pump or something does it help push or pull the coolant? I'm new to BMW an the nearest mechanic that will touch my car is an hour away
