E46 AC Expert Needed

My question has to do with the AC high pressure side, specifically the high pressure sensor, near the receiver/dryer, which is supposed to detect excessive high-side pressure to signal the ECM to turn off the compressor to prevent damage to AC components.

My question is whether excessive pressure (and sensor activation) is a rare event and for sure indicates a problem elsewhere, or if it is a rather frequent event in a normally operating AC system. In other words, I am trying to determine whether a normally operating system should never allow pressure to get that high in the first place, even on a hot day and in stop and go traffic. Or whether high pressure side will routinely hit that range, and the sensor plays a regular role in "modulating" the compressor and high side pressure.

My hunch is that BMW would design so that the sensor would rarely if ever be triggered. That in a healthy system the ECM and aux fan would see to it that high pressure side stayed in a "reasonable" range. But does anyone here know for sure?
