Am I missing something?!

I was looking at pics of other's cars and engine compartments and just realized that my '06 325ci that I've been driving for the last 7 mo. is missing the air intake manifold and intake tube. The car runs perfectly and I live in SC so the climate is mild. How crucial is this?

I feel dumb for not noticing this before, :facepalm:, but being new to the e46 and with everything working fine I guess I just missed it.
