I am out of ideas why 5HP19 on my wife's E46 is overheating. Transmission temperature from INPA is reading 200 and went as far as 240 during yesterday's drive. So what has been done to transmission?
1. New transmission oil pump and rebuilt torque converter were installed
2. Transmission fluid was flushed with Transmax DEX/MERC and as of yesterday it was replace with Transmax Import Muti-Vehicle
3. On original valve body oil pressure regulator had scars so did the inside of the bore. As of yesterday I swapped complete valve body from spare transmission and installed upgraded oil pressure regulator from transgo. Bore on this valve body was in good condition.
4. Temperature sensor was checked for resistance and reads about 1050Ohm at 80F and about 1650Ohm closer too 200F
5. Transmission and transmission lines temperature was checked with IR temperature gun. Heater core inlet is about 10-15F higher compared to outlet port. Inlet temperature at the core is about 210 when INPA is reporting 200F as well. Transmission pan temperature is also around 190-200F while INPA is reporting 200F. Conclusion: temperature sensor is not malfunctioning.
6. Fluid level is correct. Yesterday's full flush started with pumping oil with car off and transmission empty of fluids (except torque converter). Once fluid started to dribble car was started for about 20 seconds for fluid to get sucked up. Car was then stopped and oil pumped again until it was dribbling out. Car was then started and fluid was pumped in until it started to dribble out again. Finally car was put into reverse for about 10 seconds, 10 in neutral, and 10 in drive. Then just for the sake of it I put it in manual and cycled through gears. 10 seconds in first, 20 seconds in second, and the rest I went up from 2nd to 5th couple times (it won't stay in higher gears). More fluid was pumped in until it started to dribble out. Fill plug was installed and car was test driven. Filling temperatures were taken into consideration.
7. Today fluid level was checked after warming up the car by driving. Car was left to idle in park and fill plug was removed. Nothing came out so more fluid was pumped until it started to dribble. Fill plug reinstalled. Filling temperatures were taken into consideration.
During today's drive temperatures reached to 200-210F after 30 minutes and car was stopped. On my dad's 530 which also has 5hp19 does not heat up so quickly. Car drives fine but I am afraid that it will overheat and (or slip) which will result in slippage (or overheating). One of the two scenarios.
Side note: Most recent rebuild was caused by too much slippage and temperatures in 250-260F range. Three out of four clutches was smooth as baby's butt. My assumption is that DEX\MERC fluid either caused overheating which led to slippage or caused slippage that lead to overheating.
Please comment if you are knowledgeable in this area or know someone who can help. So far my other option is complete rebuild of spare 5hp19 with broken reverse drum and hope for the best (read: hope $500 investment will pay off).
