I think I have the dreaded vanos rattle - loud banging sound at idle (mostly), worse with ac on - goes away if you take the rpm up to 1000.
I disconnected mechanical fan - to make sure that is not source of noise- changed belts and pulleys - but nosie is still there - loudest with screw driver to ear at vanos area - but I can also hear loins noise at disa area (disconnected disa - no change) and loud with screw driver on steering pump. I guess that noise resonates around the engine ?
If rattle is due to bad seals in the vanos - would using high mileage (e.g. M1 10w40 ) oil help, with seal conditioners ? (I'm running m1 0w40 now and noise seems to be getting worse since I switched from castrol - but that could just be a coincidence )
I have 2003 325i with m56 engine - 132k miles - don't really want to remove head and vanos , if this will run for another year like that without damaging engine ?
What do you guys think ?
