I started to post about this about a week ago but found a page that had a check and fix...
Here's the scenario. 2003 BMW 325i 248k miles. The engine would idle fine - super smooth and quiet. If you push the pedal hard, it would go into limp mode. If you got about 3500 RPMs it would go into limp mode.
Performed a leak test with a $6 "transfer pump" from harbor freight. A cigarette fits beautifully into the hose adapter that comes with it. That and a balloon to seal the boot past the MAF was all that was needed. No leaks.
Found a webpage that had the same problem. His issue was the catalytic converters. Easy, but very noisy to test. Pulling the 2 PRE-converter O2 sensors and took it out confirmed they were clogged. I wouldn't recommend leaving them out for long - it would be easy to melt something in there. I swapped them out for a pair of $100 ebay headers, and $16 for 2 right angle adapters for the post O2 sensors. I did cut off one of the O2 bung and weld the right angle adapter in its place.
Yes, I know I shouldn't be running w/o the cats, but this is a toy not a daily driver, and the cats would cost a LOT more than I paid for the car. I'm posting this because I couldn't find that page again, and thought it might help others. Especially as all it took was popping out the top 2 O2 sensors which was the easiest part of the process.
