I've had lifter tick on and off for a while now, which I can deal with. But this week, the car has developed a nasty new "rattle", which I can only describe as someone shaking a spray can real quick.
Anyone have experience of this sound? Check the videos below. First one is standard lifter tick. Second video is this rattle.

As you can tell, it's slower and deeper. It's the Barry White of engine noises. Increases in speed with rpm. Very audible all through the range. Doesn't stop at any point. (Lifter tick disappears at higher revs.) It's loud enough for pedestrians to hear. If it gets any louder I think they're gonna throw tomatoes at me.
It's not the DISA or the VANOS. Car runs great, still pulling like a train. M54B22 engine. 115,000 miles.
