2000 E46 sedan no brake lights, or brake lights stuck on!

Hi all I am at an impasse with my brake lights, they are either stuck on or do not work at all in which case my information center lets me know real quick that I have no brake lights? I've checked both the bulbs in the connections and don't know where else to go from here so before I delve any further possibly into the brake light switch can anyone tell me if this is a common problem on our cars, or is there something I'm missing that could be real simple to actually fix, thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to throw me a little help!
