Hey guys! Long term stalker and first time poster here!
I have an 02 330CI Automatic. Has 151k miles on it. About 2 weeks ago the connector on the top of my upper radiator hose started leaking pretty bad. I replaced it immediately, bled the system, and never had the needle move from the 1/2 position at any point.
About a week ago I parked the car to run into the gas station and when I came out I noticed the fan was running. Didn't really think much of it, the needle stayed at the halfway mark, no coolant leaks, whatever.
The next day I had been driving the car on errands all day and had no problems of any kind. Looked like rain was coming, pulled in a parking lot to put the top up and while leaving the parking lot waiting to merge I noticed the temp needle was at the 3/4 Mark. Oh ****. Immediately turned the heat on full blast, temp went back down to the middle. Pulled in a shop down the street who lets me use some of their equipment and started trying to diagnose. Coolant was not low, Electric fan turns on everytime the AC is on, no leaks. I used an IR thermometer on both the upper and lower radiator hoses, when cold they're different until the car warms up and then theres only about a 10-20 degree difference. Seems that the thermometer is working.
Since then i've only put maybe 30 miles on the car. It's fine 90% of the time but only after you've been driving it for a while (20 mins or so) the needle starts to creep up at idle. Doesn't matter if the AC is on full blast or not. Needle goes right back to the middle when you start driving the car.
To the best of my knowledge the car hasn't gotten hotter than right under that 3/4 mark for a split second two times. I don't think thats enough to blow the head gasket. No coolant on the oil cap or dipstick, and no oil in the coolant. I used one of those funnels you tighten on the radiator cap and filled it a little with coolant. The level stays even with no bubbles. I bought a water pump and thermostat thinking I'd just throw it at the car and see what happens but after reading a few threads I'm all scared about a cracked head or head gasket and at that point I'd probably just get rid of the car. What do you guys suggest?
