Electric Fans only work with ac on

I have yet to find a straight answer on where to start with this issue...my electric fans only work with the AC on...if not on the temp gauge rises...push AC button, fans turn on instantly and temps drop. If someone could point me in the direction where to start looking or linking me to area already discussed on another forum. Much appreciated and Thanks ahead of Time.
