I am now code and squeak free!

In October I started getting the dreaded whine sound from my belts...a bearing on something was going out, but it was impossible to tell if it was the water pump, pulley, tensioner, or something else.

At around 1800 and 2300 rpm, I would hear this squeal sound that would get quieter as the car warmed up. The car ran fine otherwise.

Well,it turned out to be a big "something else". In traffic last week, my battery light came on, the my whole panel started going on and off like disco lights. The alternator bearing blew out at 96k miles (2002 330CiC), and I ran on battery power the whole way home.

Fortunately the alternator in these cars is easy to change, so I overnighted a new Bosch over and got to work. While I was in there I put on new belts, a tensioner, and a new pulley just to cover all the bases.

Back on the road the next day, the battery light came on AGAIN. After several well crafted curse words, I pulled back into my garage and started looking around. It turns out that there is a crush washer on the Bosch alternator contact, and I did crush it...meaning it wasn't making good contact. EASY FIX! :D

Went for another test drive, and it went fine...until the Service Engine light came on.

After a few more choice curse words and a beginning doubt in my mechanic abilities, I pulled back in the garage again. After attaching my code scanner, I was relieved to find a simple and unrelated problem: the common "bank 2 oxygen level" code, meaning I needed new precat O2 sensors.

Popped those in (they looked awful-like the ends were made of cigar ash), cleared my codes, and BAM! Back on the road baby!...with a little more power to boot.

Moral of the story: always crush the crush washer.
