Tire review- Mayrun M500/Kinforest KF550

Tires- Mayrun M500 (unfortunate choice of name, I know) and Kinforest KF550.

Sizes- Mayrun 225/35/19, Kinforest 255/30/19

The reason that I am reviewing both tires together is that Mayrun/Kinforest is actually one company, so other than the name on the side wall, they are the same tires.

Before anyone jumps on my case about buying cheap Chinese tires off of ebay (and with two years of managing a tire shop on my resume, I know that I should know better), allow me to explain; I wasn't even sure that my wheels would fit my car with out some major fender work, so my original plan was to buy some used tires. That fell through when I couldn't find a single tire used in the size I needed. Some searching on ebay lead me to the Mayruns. Some googling found some surprisingly good reviews, but no one had really updated these reviews after their initial impressions. The tires were $347 shipped to my door, so to me, it was worth it. I wanted to have as little into these wheels as possible just in case they didn't work out for me.

My expectations-

I was really expecting the worst. I have seen some terrible things come through the shop on Chinese tires. I was anticipating a rough ride (even more so, because I was looking at 30 series tires), lots of noise, and horrible in the wet.

Initial impressions-

I was initially impressed at the specs of the tires. Traction and temperature ratings were both "A", they also have the highest speed rating that you can get. Tread wear is 320/280 on the Mayruns and Kinforest respectively, which is right were one would expect a performance ZR tire with a speed rating of Y to fall. I still held my judgement in reserve until I got them on the car and down the road.

Then it was time to put them on....

WOW! Holy crap on a cracker, these are way better than I thought they would be! My previous tires were Dunlop SP Sports in the front and Falken 912's in the rear. All were 205/50/17. I am a fan of the Falkens, but the Dunlops were horrid; extremely noisy, even on smooth roads, and terrible in the wet. The Mayruns are many times quieter than the old tires, which was a surprise to me. They handle really well in the wet too. The biggest surprise though was their ride quality. As I mentioned before, I was expecting a horrible ride. I thought those 30 series tires would just amplify every little pebble in the road, but it was actually the opposite. The ride quality is so much better than before; smoother, quieter, better handling.

It has now been two weeks and 1000 miles since I put them on (I drive a lot). I am still pleased with these tires. The only thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a little more noise than initially, but that could just be my (probably original) wheel bearings straining under the newly added extra unsprung weight and negative camber. I will report back after I get those taken care of.

I do like these tires, but don't get me wrong, a lot better tire can be had, but in a much higher price bracket. If you are on a budget though, I do reccomend these as an option. I have only put 1000 miles on them, but I will continue to update this review as I put more and more miles on them.
