As the title notes, I've got a really exceptional 2005 E46 M3 coupe, with only 55k on it, that I plan on continuing to own for the long haul. My car has the COMP package, and is fully Dinan badged, including offering 370hp on tap. It has the Harmon Kardon audio, NAV, and a single cd player.
My issue now is an urgent need to upgrade the stereo head unit with something that can give me more modern functionality, iPod control, with high quality audio, as well as quality blue connectivity for use with my phone. That last part has recently become a necessity for my work, and when I pull the car out of its winter storage, I will need a solid solution, and, preferably, one that doesn't break the bank. (This was SO much easier when I had the E36!)
I really, really don't want to have to cut into anything in the dash, and that seems to eliminate all worthwhile (double din) aftermarket head units from Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood,etc.. Those would otherwise have been my clear preference, excepting at least some degree of appearance concerns.
That would seem to leave my only limited, viable options as a Dynavin, Avin, unit. While these units are quite pricey, I wouldn't trust any of the other "off brands" and they do seem to offer everything in a package that also eliminates any issues over appearance, replacing the factory equipment.
I've spent a LOT of time researching here in the forum in terms of finding what is available. I would normally be very concerned about buying into an offshore solution from a factory I've never heard of, but Jeff from J&T Distribution seems to be a really stand up guy in terms of offering quality customer support, so that, at least, helps. And he offers, and backs both Dynavin and AVIN.
At this point, my questions are as follows:
Can I count on long term reliability of the Dynavin and/or AVIN units?
Is their sound quality on par with my existing head unit?
Do the Android units, which I would probably prefer, being on my third Android phone, require hot spot connectivity (which will raise my already too expensive monthly cell phone bill) and, do they need to stay connected to the internet all of the time? This would quickly wipe out my available monthly data limit, which is not something I can afford. This is why I can't even use Pandora, at the moment.
If the answer to the above will significantly raise the monthly charges on my cell phone bill, what is the best alternative option?
Are there any quality, workable offerings from the usual car stereo manufacturers that I am not aware of?
Lastly, my one serious limitation, should I choose to go with the Dynavin or AVIN solution is that there is not a single, reliable, competent car audio installation shop in even the extended area where I live (Metro Detroit/Southeastern, Michigan). I would need to have someone professionally install the unit (trust me on this, I am car audio installation impaired). And, of course, depending on the cost of the installation, this whole solution might get too expensive.
Any thoughts, recommendations, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
