different part numbers for same part? (differential)

What's the deal with BMW diff part numbers? Is it true that they changed the numbers for the same part every so often? I've found a diff that looks the same as on my car (same ratio (2.91), same car (330xd touring auto with same engine), only the part number is different (my car: 7500789, replacement part: 7500788).
