Gas tank door

Question. Isnt the gas tank door only open once u unlock your vehicle? I went to fill up before my job interview and when i got to the gas station the attendant told me I was missin my cap. I asked well im always here. Did u guys forget to put it on? Nope. I get home from my interview and as im parking one of the guys next door to us that works in a shop comes out and says "hey u know ur missing a gas cap? Some guy was next to your car and i asked what were you doing, he turned and took off running." Now idk who da f@cks takes ppl gas caps. So i went to check my gas tank door and now with the car lock i can simply push the gas tank door open as if the car was unlocked. Did he damage anything by prying it open?
