Hello ladies and gentlemen.
I've been lurking these parts for a while now but my current issue sparked me to sign up for this wonderful resource of info and entertainment.
I've been using the search function for a while but either I suck at it or the answers are REALLY well hidden, I'm suspecting it's the former.
As the title states, my power steering has gone awry.
I drive a 2000 330Ci
The other day I was driving along happily merrily, nothing gone amiss.
All of a sudden, after a short break, I start the car up and there's a suspicious rubbing/rumbling sound coming from under the hood.
When I turn the wheel, power steering WORKS, it still delivers the power I need it to, but the steering wheel vibrates and sounds like it's rubbing or something odd like that.
I've read a tip on turning the wheel lock to lock, but that didn't help sadly.
Next I went to youtube and saw a video on checking if it's the pump.
I don't recall exactly what he says, and I can't find the damn thing, but my test went like this.
1. uncap the ATF ONLY steering pump reservoir.
2. Start car and turn the steering wheel.
The level of the power steering fluid didn't change a whole lot, my suspicions are that the shaft of the power steering pump took a 1 way trip to Snap City, but seeing as my experience with car mechanicals can be described as "Permanent Amateur Hour" I'd like to see what you fine folks think.
Thanks for any help!
