Hi everyone,
Just looking for confirmation that I am on the right track with diagnosing a faulty Power Steering Pump.
I replaced my LF20 power steering pump on my 2001 330i because the shaft snapped.I installed a recon unit but despite bleeding the system numerous times and making sure there was flow to the pump I still don't have power steering. I believe the reservoir filter is ok (removed it and cleaned it as best I could).
As a last resort, I disconnected the high pressure pipe from the rack but left it connected to the pump. I stood ready with a gallon of fluid to fill the reservoir and then I started the engine.
I expected fluid to be pumped out under high pressure but nothing happened The pulley spins, the pump spins and the belt tensioner is fine but nothing happens. The pump doesn't make any noises, not even the whine you get on full lock.
Am I right in thinking that with the line disconnected from the rack, it should have sucked fluid from the reservoir rapidly and shot the fluid out at a high rate? I did completely remove the pressure pipe afterwards and check that it wasn't blocked.
To me it does seem like the recon unit is faulty?
Thanks for any advice
Mike
