I started my car up for the first time in 4-5 months about a week+ ago and it started without issue. Drove it around got everything back in shape. Noticed the coolant level indicator light on the dash came on while I was driving around but once I got where I was going the light turned off. The indicator light kept coming on like this intermittently but the level in the expansion tank was/is totally fine and I looked around to check for any leaks but couldn't find any.
Pressure tested the cooling system overnight to see if any leaks were visible. Since none, replaced the expansion tank cap since it needed to be anyways. Changed oil, oil filter, cabin filter, put in new spark plugs, and replacing the auxiliary fan switch because they needed to be done and I plan on taking the car on a 1,600 mile drive soon and it just rolled over 101,000 miles so I want her in good shape. After this little service, drove the car 200 miles to go see family and no issue with coolant light. Then the next day i turn on my car and get a service engine soon light and the coolant level light on. I check the codes with a crappy little scan tool I have and get:
Table 20 codes:
2883 - mixtur preparation bank2
2774 - engine cutoff time
2882 - mixture preparation bank1
in that order but I got those faults last winter with some cold weather and it was cold and rainy that day so I cleared the faults to see if they would come back on and since then they have not.
The coolant light started coming on intermittently a lot more the next day and then I was driving around and noticed the temperature gauge was dropping on the dash which must be somewhat significant since it normally hides temperature fluctuations.
Decided I may need to bleed out the coolant system as some air may have gotten trapped in the system while the car was in storage. Not sure if that would be the issue but worth trying when I get back home.
I decided I will drive around and see if I could get the coolant light to stay off with some conditions and come back on with certain conditions to maybe help narrow down whats causing the light to come on intermittently.
I used the OBD in the dash with test 7 to read the current temperature of the coolant. Drove around and sat at idle and recorded values. An example of the gauge read out was 0081 and I assumed that to mean 81 degrees CELSIUS but not positive.
When idling without the heater / A/C system on the temperature read out was about 90 deg C +/- 1 and the coolant light would NOT come on.
When idling with the heater on high and fan just on, the temperature would fluctuate between 85 and 90 deg C and the coolant level indicator light would come on.
When driving with the heater on high and fan just on, the temperature would fluctuate between 75 and 86 deg C and the coolant level indicator light would come on intermittently and go off when I would come to a stop. Temperature would also rise when I came to a stop.
when driving without the heater / A/C system on the temperature read out was between 79 and 87 deg C and the coolant light would NOT come on.
The weather outside stayed at 45 degrees FAHRENHEIT with very light rain/mist all day.
Any help on other things to test out or any clues of what the issue could be would be greatly appreciated.
