For some time I've been chasing a front end vibration that seems to keep evolving with every attempt to solve the problem. After replacing almost everything it's still there, and I'm at a loss for what it could be.
My car: '05 330xi non-sport
My symptoms currently: A steering wheel vibration under moderate braking. None when the brake pedal is lightly applied, or heavily applied, just in the middle.
What I've replaced:
Front axles (cardones :bleh:)
Front rotors (Zimmerman)
Front pads (can't remember, starts with a P?)
Struts (Koni yellows)
Springs (Eibach)
Front lower control arms (oem)
Inner ball joints (oem)
Front control arm bushings (oem)
The long story:
This began with a front end vibration I was getting under heavy acceleration (usually up a hill, in the cold, when the engine was hot). I narrowed this down to a bad axle (I was having other symptoms as well).
So I go to replace the axles, and find that I need brakes. And, if I've got the ting in the air, why not lower it like I've always wanted. A few days later, I get to work and I replace the axles, brakes, and struts/shock and springs all around. I get an alignment and I couldn't be happier
The vibration went away! ... for a week :(
Now it comes back as a nasty steering wheel vibration like I described above. I come here and most answers lean toward the front control arm bushings. And again, while I'm in there, why not do the control arms and ball joints.
I finish, I'm satisfied with the work, excited to finally be done with this fiasco. Take it for a test drive, and wouldn't you know? The vibration is still there (albeit, less noticeable).
Where is it????? What am I doing wrong?????
My theory is that when I was messing with the front struts is whacked at the hub a little too hard and broke loose the bushings. This caused the new vibration, but I drove around on it for too long and that warped the rotors. Even though they are brand new, can this happen?
My car is spending far too much time up on blocks and not enough time out on the road. I was hoping to get at least another 100k out of her, but this is getting ridiculous! (btw, I'm all out of $$$, just bought a house, yay! so another car isn't gonna happen)
