Can someone explain the exhaust differences between 2-stroke and 4-stroke?

I don't mean the actual exhaust process, but the physical exhaust manifold/expanders. Every 2-stroke bike I rode/saw growing up had pipes similar to this, but a 4-stroke has an exhaust manifold or headers. Why the difference?
