AC blows warm on pass. side: coolant, HCV, or heater control box?

Springtime might have finally arrived in the mid-Atlantic, and that means I've had the opportunity to use my AC a couple of times. Alas, I seem to have fallen victim to the AC issue where it blows warm on the passenger side and cool on the driver side.

This issue has been discussed at some length on this forum, though reports of a definitive resolution have been mixed. The issue seems to be one of three things:

  1. Low refrigerant. (As the Bimmerfest wiki suggest.)

  2. A faulty heater control valve.

  3. A stuck door in the heater control box.

Having a professional check the refrigerant is easy and inexpensive. But assuming for a moment that it's either #2 or #3, do y'all have any thoughts on how to go about diagnosing one over the other? I'd prefer not to take things apart that I don't need to take apart.

As always, thank you for any advice.
