Throttle stuck on freeway in traffic...

Good times on the freeway today here in SoCal. After about an hour and a half of rush hour traffic at speeds less than 10mph on the 210, my 2001 330i (116K miles) started shifting a little roughly (it's a steptronic and I was in regular D mode)... within another minute or so, the EML light came on and I lost all throttle control and couldn't get the car much over 5mph.

Fortunately, drivers were cool and let me inch over to the shoulder. The car at that point turned off on its own and I fired up Torque, saved the codes, reset them and then started up the car again after a minute or two. Everything seemed fine and I was able to drive the rest of the way home (another hour of heavy traffic) again with no issue.

Codes from Torque were (all were "Pending Faults"):
  • P0102 - Powertrain - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
  • P0171 - Powertrain - System too Lean (Bank 1)
  • P0174 - Powertrain - System too Lean (Bank 2)
  • P1638 - Powertrain - Throttle Valve Position Control; Throttle Stuck Temporarily
  • P1639 - Powertrain - Throttle Valve Position Control; Throttle Stuck Permanently

About 45 minutes prior to all this happening, the DSC light had come on (it's been doing this lately).

I normally have a very short drive without traffic and the car is fine, so seems like something with the lengthy stop and go set this off.

I'll get the car in next week, but interested in theories...
